It can feel pretty bleak, but, for a town of 66k (and maybe 45k for 3 months of the year) I think Ames has some pretty good options.

I remember some pretty good dumpster diving walking home from the bars..

I think there's certainly some good locally owned restaurants for adults (Cafe, Maudes, Dublin type of places) but for a large University the campustown amenities are terrible.
