Listening to the excellent Corner 3 podcast with Matt Thomas got me thinking.

I only watch ISU and NBA, I have never seen Green play.

Just from highlights I can tell he is not similar to Monte, Haliburton or Kane in that he doesn't seem like a pure point guard. Those are three styles of pure point guards and I don't see similarity to any of them.

How does he compare to these players (comparing senior level play):
Brockington: Decent shooter, excellent defender, excellent rebounder, above the rim finisher, not ideal as primary ball handler (defensive minded athletic shooting guard)
Naz: Excellent shooter, good defender, good penetrating, good finisher at rim but not above the rim, could have been a fine point guard if needed to play that position (sharp shooting penetrating point guard)
Thomas: Excellent shooter, great defender, not great finisher at rim, average passer, not ideal as primary ball handler (3&D shooting guard)

Which is he closest to? Is he somewhere between two of these guys? Seems most like Naz to me from what I have read and seen. Remember Naz was freaking great as a senior, fringe NBA player, currently Italian Serie A rookie of the year so it's high praise to compare anybody to him. (all four of these guys are 6'3" to 6'4")
Personally I think the closest in recent years is an underrated guy. I think AJ would be a higher usage, better version of Chris Allen. Played some PG but played well off the ball. Third team all big 12 and shot 37% from 3.

Green has a little Hoiberg in his game.

I would agree that Fred is the best comp for AJ.

AJ is a better ballhandler than guys like Shayok, Thomas or Naz but can shoot 3 pt shot on par with those guys.

IMO Green and Holmes can play PG if we are running PnR, weave or motion offense. They might not be as proficient running a halfcourt offense relying on the PG to beat his defender off the dribble from the top of key.

Naz was pretty nifty with the ball his senior year.

Scheyer is going to pick up right where Coach K left off. The fact that Coach K basically picked Scheyer is going to help get Duke whomever they want.
The K coaching tree is surprisingly thin. Am I forgetting someone, or is Quin Snyder (after flaming out at Mizzou and spending years wandering the the desert) the most successful? Scheyer is playing the NIL game well, but I guess I’d be surprised if he’s still there in 5 years.

Similar to last year, if you would have told me we would lose our best players and actually be better, I wouldn’t have believed you. I think this team (with Green) is significantly better than this years squad and has depth at every position of proven D-1 experience.

It’s not the same until Scheyer proves he’s up for the job. But he’s going to have to be pretty bad to screw up at Duke.

Long term or after like 4 years will be telling but things should be fine out of the gates.

Mike Brey's done pretty well.
