Pollard sounds off on NIL, changing landscape of college athletics in interview on Murphy & Andy

Iowa State athletics needs to do everything it can possibly (and legally) do to ensure it is part of whatever entity exists to compete for a football championship at the highest level. Iowa State isn’t going anywhere because of people like you and me; but if we find ourselves in a lower division (a la FCS), it will greatly hurt financially and in future growth.

And I know Jamie and crew are doing just that, but parts of that interview worry me that he is tempering our expectations in this future world.

I've got to disagree with this one, it would function just like the NFL, and all 30 teams would be happy. Each team would have periods of success, followed by periods of rebuilding, (there would eventually be a salary cap and collective bargaining) . Also keep in mind that a little over .500 would make the playoffs. They would all be happy.
This is false. The #1 thing that brings competitive balance to the NFL and NBA is high draft picks for bad teams. How are you going to pull that off for the “Top 30” league. Force 5-stars to go to Mississippi St?

Also the ability to trade draft picks for established players.

It’s not even about being apart of the 30. It’s that Iowa State won’t even be in the lower middle class neighborhood we are now.

We won’t be in the same group as Oklahoma State, baylor, tcu, Kansas State, Tech

We will be at a lower level than that.

The other big thing the NFL has is a salary cap. So you through in the draft, salary cap, more equal revenue and you have a more balanced group than the current NIL stuff blasting through the NCAA.

Being the first to jump, only to find out it wasn’t top 30, but top 56 or top 60 will be brutal for the university.

Top-30 requires fracturing of BIG and SEC and winning legal challenges. It’s decades away at best. There will be at least three conferences in the top level, and JP needs to be soap-boxing as to the only thing that risks our inclusion in that- fan sentiment. Pomerantz’s useful idiots

Well it actually is.

You have to train your fanbase to donate for real p6 athletic programs like you would an apprentice magician
JP’s foremost job going on 16 years now.

Not an easy job, given the way the state and State thinks about ISU, but by far never with more tailwind. Unfortunately, I think JP succumbed to the challenge.

His best attributes were not best suited for it. Those attributes also likely why he’s still here- he’s basically one of us. During this time of inherent increase in the ISU community/base and conference revenue, we needed stability AND someone to change the culture. We were fortunate enough to get a warning shot 12 years ago.

The salary cap will accomplish competitive balance. Forget everything you know about how college football currently operates for the 30ish that break away.

So...question...

If/when this top 30 or <arbitrary number> breaks off, there's going to have to be two or three separate leagues for each sport, correct? 'Bama and Georgia aren't going to drag their MBB teams along into a top 30, just like Kansas and Duke aren't bringing their football teams. Not to mention non-P5 basketball teams that don't even have a Div. I football team.

There's only a handful of schools...as of today...that could swing having both CFB and MBB in the top 30.

Guess I just wanted to point out how much more of a headache this break-off could be.

All very good questions and why we’re decades away from a formal top-30. It’s rather optimistic to think ISU will be joined by 35+ other current P5s on the outside looking in.

A real risk 5-10 that are culled to fade away on the G5 revenue, with NIL and pay to play as the catalyst.

Oh it absolutely will be. But the folks controlling this endeavor only care about brands. And really only football matters

I know this is kinda out of right field but why does the NFL get a free ride out of player development? MLB and NBA have their development leagues. I know the schools have gotten addicted to the money and probably that's why the ND president said a semi pro league will form where the schools license their names but it really has nothing to do with the school but they still get the money. Sorry about the rant but we are in a game we can't win.
