Average Joe Cyclone Fan contribute to NIL

I’m aware we are Iowa State. Donated since 2001 when I was 24 years old. The panhandler analogy was a really great one. I l love the super cool guy act that I’m not going to donate $.17 a day because I have to buy alcohol and I’m not getting a return out of it. I’m guessing you take from the penny bowl at the local store as well.

There are a lot of valid comments made in this thread. For everybody, giving is a personal decision. In one form or another I spent 15 years (part time as I had a job) trying to raise money for ISU athletics. This thread will help you understand why ISU is last in the B12 in giving. Very tough sell. Not in cyclone DNA. I will probably donate some to NIL, but like others, I just gave $2500 MORE per year to keep my basketball seats.
This is todays world. We did not create it, but we must live in it. I understand the frustration, but I feel there are a few too many conspiracy theories attached. I just hope for those who are so negative about all this will not post negative comments about team and player performance in the future.
I am sure we can have reasonably good teams with minimal NIL $. We just need to recognize this will further differentiate the haves and the have nots. I suspect we know which side we fall on.

We are going to quickly move to the soccer system. What booster is going to be happy to spend $ and have the player transfer the following year for $$$. There's going to be contracts in place in the next couple years saying you play here for X years and $$$ or go NBA. Some kids are going to get burned without some sort of players union.

I still haven't figured out how women's sports is going to survive this. This much money involved in getting players on your team is going to need support from the AD and coaches to make sure the player is an actual fit for the team. I can see the Title IX lawsuits coming.

If I had to guess, once the Title IX issues are settled, we are going to see some athletic departments break away from their host universities and create some sort of league. They'll claim the history, but it will never be the same.

Will there be an opportunity for the average fan to contribute to an NIL fund for Iowa State players? If not, someone needs to get one going. Most of us aren’t millionaires or even close to that, but I’m sure we could get a large number of average joe fans to donate to an NIL fund. I hope this option is available. I would love to donate and, knowing our rabid fan base, I’m sure others would as well.

Thank you for starting this thread. As others have said, a collective is in the works as we speak, apparently. I guess we stay tuned to see how that works.

I will likely contribute my fair share (whatever that is) when the collective comes out. I will likely contribute more when reasonable rules and regulations are added to this mess.

I respect your opinion, but why the hard “no.” Sounds like you are close to this point now. What would have to happen to change your mind? I am serious. We need to figure out how to make everyone happy, or at least more at ease with the new way of doing business. I do appreciate all that you have done for the university.

If it was 'sign NIL deal, you have to stay at least two years at the school if you don't go pro' or something, that might make more sense.

But a bunch of fans donating with the player open to leave (unless that's not a thing)? Yeah no.

That’s fine. Once again a personal choice. But if a fan chooses to not donate to Cyclone Club or NIL during this time period then they cannot ***** about the results.

If an average fan can’t give $5 a month ($60 year) ($.17 a day) to the NIL fund then we might as well accept an invitation to C-USA because that is where our fans (collectively) are willing to compete. Every little bit is going to count.

I would donate to an NIL for Men’s basketball. I just have more fun when we have good players and are good at basketball, so its worth it for me.

Hope you are correct - but I am not sure.
The “haves “ will favor this. They will enjoy their even increased power. People seldom give up their privileged situation easily. The legal fights, assuming a solution reduces payments to players or restricts their “opportunities” will be significant - the outcome unknown. I am obviously pessimistic about NIL and it’s impact on ISU.
There may be (doubtful in my opinion) more clear rules about administration of the plans, but who will enforce? Even now it’s clear the NCAA will not touch the powerful. I will try to make this my last doom and gloom post - but that’s how I feel. We will survive losing Hunter, and hopefully piece together another surprising team.

My take is the blue bloods have been cheating for years and this just “legalizes” it.

So now that’s it legal and out in the open, sure, I can cancel my Netflix subscription and give the money to nil instead: all good. If thousands upon thousands of fans feel the same way, they will have plenty of money to pay players.
