Testifying
I have my reasons for not joining the premium boards. But having premium members come here and talk down to you for not joining is hilarious and only adds to my reasons not to join. Total doosh move.
I'm for the most part skimming, who is talking down to you?

I don't believe Jamie and the coaches in place want to be spenders in the NIL marketplace for athlete's. If business people, donors, etc. want to create funds, so be it. But they aren't going to actively pull money away from projects that benefit the greater/long-term AD/University goals.

NIL has just legalized what had been happening in the sleazy side of "big time" college sport to pay athletes.

My guess is JP has coaches in place in Matt and TJ who don't want NIL to be a corner piece of their programs or recruiting approach. In other words if guys can make Honda Civic $ awesome. But not Lamborghini money.

From a school and coach perspective I understand that approach. If Jamie/TJ coordinate behind the scenes to get Tyrese six-figure $ where does it stop? He'll want that money next season as well. If Eli King blows up and is our leading scorer- then he'll want to get paid. And if we have another NCAA Tournament team- there will be more than 1-2 basketball starters that want coin.

Then that mentality will carry over to the FB, WBB, VB, etc teams. This isn't JUST about NIL $ for Tyrese. This is about 6 figure NIL money for maybe a dozen athletes across multiple ISU teams.

they also can not, university in no way can be tied to the money going to NIL for players.

Yeah and the last five years have absolutely sucked. I used to know all the players, knew who was coming in, and everything. I couldn’t really tell you who was on the team before the start of the season last year. Last years team started to rebuild that love for the team again.

If it’s going to basically be free agency though I don’t have the mental capacity to put what I used to into it. It’s not healthy for people to commit to a team like they historically have and have absolutely zero commitment on the other side.

Maybe you haven’t cared or invested in it as much as others so you don’t have that aspect. That’s fine but then my support is going to be more like that where I watch but don’t compromise the rest of my life for the schools. I will have a transactional relationship with Iowa State instead of investing in the school. I won’t buy NIL items for free agents. If they leave I won’t care how they do.

That reality is worth a hell of a lot less than what you have now.

Agree a lot with what you've said. I think a example that I think of is Niang graduating being highly successful in the NBA and still having time to give back to the Ames Community through his golf outing, they added a trivia night this yr and a group of us signed up for that. I'd much rather spend my discretionary income on that then on someone who won't appreciate what little bit I could contribute to a NIL.

I appreciate what ISU provided in my time there and since, but I'm supportive of the University and not the individuals on sports teams.

Wouldn't those things all happen without NIL too?
To an extent, but if the money (and therefore talent) accumulates into blue bloods, there could potentially be a limited number of schools swimming in resources while the vast majority of schools struggle to remain relevant. That could dramatically change the amount many schools are willing to plow into athletic programs.

But they're blue bloods because the money and talent have already accumulated there.

Is he going to KU or Iowa or something? Like I really don’t care if he goes to UNC.

Hell if I know. Maybe it has less to do with where he ends up than that he went back on his word or something. The symbolism isn't exactly subtle though, is it?

I think it would be naive to think that some AD's are not out there encouraging certain donors to create NIL funds. And then those donor groups work in concert with coaches to offer incentives to existing players or recruits.

Really no different than what happened in the past, it's just the money payment is above board.

It can get dramatically worse

How? There's still a scholarship limit. Taking a transfer means they aren't bringing in a 4 or 5 star recruit. This is just shuffling talent around, not that teams like Duke or Kentucky will suddenly have 25 guys on scholarship on their roster.
