Say what you want, but I think college basketball as we enjoyed it is over. I just don’t think it’s going to be much fun to follow knowing that kids and teams can go shopping with who can get paid and who is willing to pay them the most.
Yeah, it's starting to feel that way. The NIL stuff is less than a year old...this is the first transfer cycle with it.
Even without NIL, the portal has basically created an environment where teams are turning over 1/4 of their roster each year.

Based on three schools this semester, I don't know this guy's schedule, but I know that class attendance is not a priority among athletes in general.
Yep. And for those who are saying "this has been going on forever" and that this just evens the playing field, this is much different now. At least before NIL, schools and coaches had to be at least a little careful and extremely selective on who they made offers to. Now, it's just the Wild Wild West.
TJ pushes it hard. Jaz mentioned something about it on the Stanz and Thug Life podcast. If someone skipped class the whole team had to run is what I believe he said
You recruit a kid, put the time to develop them and once they hit their potential people come sniffing and they decide I’m worth X and then they leave.
Not sure how other coaches will feel about knowing they are competing to get guys in as high school kids while also competing to try and keep your best players on your roster.
This is why I was against paying college athletes (this form of it) there seems to be no rules. I don’t have faith in the NCAA to regulate it, but someone needs to make some standard rules regarding compensation where teams can complete on a more level playing field
I'll say it has been going on forever, but would never have said it levels the playing field. No change we see in regards to NCAA sports will do so as long as the biggest brands are the only ones with any pull. The Alabamas and Texases of the world have no reason to do anything that will hurt their advantages. If anything comes about to address NIL issues, it will only be to further entrench advantages for those that already have them.
It’s kind of shocking to me that traditional football powers don’t seem to be pumping up their basketball teams to maximum inflation through NIL.
I remember after getting hired either on a podcast on CF or on the radio TJ was asked about the transfer portal and how he was able to keep a guy like Mike Daum from leaving South Dakota St. His response about it was a lot less jaded or cynical than most coaches were about the portal. Basically said that part of his job is to cultivate an environment that makes guys wanna stick around and it was something he embraces. Maybe he didn’t do that for Tyrese somehow, but it’s sad to think that he could have done that perfectly and it might not matter a bit in the end. And yeah I get it, good for him getting paid especially with everything he’s been through. Still sad to think about to me though

Season's over, though. It's a long tradition that athletic attendance drops when their season ends.
Currently, that starts earlier, like the old stereotypes used to suggest.
That's also my (somewhat-older-than-35) guess. I didn't have trouble translating it, but the post suggested a between-the-lines meaning to it.
NIL wasn't around when Daum was at SDSU, so if he went to a place like Kentucky or Gonzaga it would have been to win a title. Different conversation when guys are rumored to be getting 6 figures. It sucks as a fan, but if you were 19 could you turn down a 6 figure offer? I wouldn't.
Hell I couldn't turn it down now. It definitely changes the game but I do think TJ having the mindset about it that he does is only a positive.
There are exceptions but they are rare exceptions.
Look no further than the chaos that came from displacing non-donors in football. Those sections were full at the cheapest priced tickets and zero donation required with the loudest noise coming from those who said they had groups of tickets together.
We’ve made progress growing our base but a good portion of that growth has come from non donors. That combined with NIL is going to keep us in this position.
I get what you’re saying but let’s not act like a Kentucky or Kansas wouldn’t have ponied up some $ for Daum, NIL or not. And I get what you mean for sure, that type of $ at that age is tough to turn down. Also makes you think about the other factors at hand and what that decision looks like. Say he’s getting offered more at some place but the role isn’t as good as another place that’s offering him less. Or he prefers the location of a place offering him less. And so on and so forth with any other factor you can think of. Just makes me wonder how much the other factors play into the decision making for guys, if they even do at all. For some I’m sure it’s just highest bidder.
The institutions took the easy and cheap way out of the “pay the student athlete” predicament and it resulted in NIL. If a liveable wage could have been agreed to across the board, then ISU could have competed. We can’t compete in the NIL world.
