As somebody who has tried to raise money for ISU sports - NIL will be very bad for us. We do not have the people with the big $ to compete with the elite. We lose in bidding wars.
It’s true JP hasn’t changed a thing in 16 years in that regard. Still behind KSU. Good thing TV revenues have increased and the natural growth of the fanbase.
The issue with NIIL and its successor pay-to-play is if its uncapped, or capped at a very high amount. Because players the most valuable input. The market will grow quickly.
Paying players no more a disadvantage than the uncapped arms race used to attract players. You think pgs are expensive with no certain ROI, try buildings and multiple-year coaching contracts. Paying players is the most direct and cheapest way to compete.
NIL right now isn’t bad if 500k gets you a starting pg. The program takes in more fan money than that, it just gets spent on things less impactful to winning. It is only bad because there’s been little leadership- fans may be oblivious to what they’re spending on, but the AD isn’t. Even if no additional new fan spending, the AD gains more long term if a portion of the season ticket revenue redirected to NIL. ISU if leaving NIL to chance is the opposite of what needs to be done.
The blueblood don’t want NIL or pay to play either. They have a near monopoly on recruiting right now, with brand value from tradition and history being huge barriers. Shoe money too. NIL and pay to pay are equalizers in that regard. Tech is one donor’s check away from being able to steal a recruit from KU, and for it to be legal
