His film reminded me of Fizer, not at that level but what he did. The rest of the team was spacing the floor and he'd weave in and out of the lane getting his guy to chase then he'd dive for the basket.
I'd take Jones anyday.
Beverly was also signed in SP's third year. Hopefully TJ has it rolling with higher tier guys by then.
Gainey is a defense and rebound guy. He isn’t taking anyones lunch on offense. He averages 9 points a game in a weak conference. He would be a solid defense and rebound guy. Which is fine but we need some scorers badly
He hides at the back side block really well. He and Hunter could shred teams.
Outside of Robert Jones and Grill, (who had at one point earlier been at ISU) all of the guys TJ recruited as transfers last year came from Power 6 schools. Is that a requirement for TJ's transfer recruitment strategy or more a coincidence?
I've always believed Nixon got a bad rap. A high percentage of his 3-point attempts came with the shot clock running down, which was caused by overall bad offense and indecisive teammates. He also played hard and was ok on defense.
Actually similar to GK, but with no Hunter or Brockington, Nixon was forced to try and be more than he was.
I don't get why some people think that our "5" spot on offense needs to average 12 points a game. All Jameel McKay was asked to do was catch lobs from Monte and get blocks on the other end. f we get a #1 type scorer and another shooter than why not go after a guy like Gainey? Adds another big 12 caliber athlete and defensive guy.
He definitely ended up as the one with the ball in his hands at the end of the shot clock needing to create whatever after Haliburton and Bolton went down. But that was 1/4 the season.
I remember him taking an awful number of early-in-the-clock prayers early in the year. So much so that Tre Jackson started to take all of his minutes before injuries forced him back on the court. If freshman Tre Jackson is taking your minutes and junior Tre Jackson isn't seeing any playing time on the present squad then I think that indicates pretty well just what Nixon was bringing to the table for the team.
I don't remember Nixon being a particularly pesky defender, either. He didn't have a fraction of the lateral quickness that Kalscheur has, and Kalscheur is usually guarding the best outsider scorer of an opponent. Haliburton -- an obviously superior basketball player in all ways to Nixon, Bolton, and really anybody outside of a select few elite guards in Iowa State history -- was usually doing that back then.

In terms of sheer talent it's probably not a bad comp. What you really have to take into consideration is what roles the guys were brought in for. Jones was brought in more or less to be a warm practice body and play spot minutes. It has turned into a bit more than what was originally planned due to Foster leaving. He was supposed to be the guy that was gonna make the starters work a little harder in practice and intra squad scrimmages. He has turned into a guy that out of necessity, plays about 7-15 minutes any given night.
Beverly was brought in to hopefully fill in some scoring vacancy and be a regular starter. At UTSA the season prior, he had averaged an inefficient 15 ppg. I think Prohm reached on him pretty early in the portal season if I recall right, settled, and in so doing made his first colossal blunder in a series of blunders to come. The season was a failure due to heavy reliance on 2 freshmen having to do too much and 2 transfers (Beverly, Brase) who were either too injured or too above their heads at this level to compete.
Moral of the story is, I think Jones is better than Beverly too.
Dunked all over Duke? He had a put back where no one blocked him out and then had a wide open dunk. If all you are looking is to replace Conditt's production, you aren't improving the team. The goal should be to get better and there are other 6'9 guys that can provide the same as this guy. Also, maybe you don't remember that last year Duke wasn't very good. Their defense was especially bad.
