Gainey played at Brown. People really need to factor in the level of competition. There are lots of guys that could fill a limited role like that. After TJ showing he can coach the team back to a winning record and the tournament they should be looking at better players than that.

Some recent successful ivy transfers

To clarify - i do believe ISU can and will target more proven prospects that will be on market shortly but below is some examples of players finding high major success coming “up” from the Ivy

Most of those make my point. And I don't know if I would call all of them successful. Guys usually produce a lot less than what they did at a lower level. I remember a lot of people after Smith but even look at what his numbers were at Michigan compared to his prior numbers. All those guys produced more than Gaines did. So you are looking at adding a player that gives you maybe 4 pts 2 rbs a game and a block a game? I mean just bring back Conditt if you are going to do that. Nothing against the kid. But I would hope ISU aims higher and then gets someone like him if they miss on some others.

We’re in agreement on your last sentence. But fact remains that ISU is recruiting this kid to some degree, to what level is unknown.

......Tyon Grant-Foster was a Prohm target before he went to KU and flamed out there.

Javan Johnson was a Cyclone. Didn't go so well.

Jalen Terry was another Prohm target before committing to Oregon and flaming out in Eugene.
No doubt Steve struggled with transfers.
The good news is-- we now have a coach who can evaluate transfer talent, and more importantly, he can get them to Ames.

There were some good or even great ones under Prohm --

Donovan Jackson was a great shooter.

Darryle Bowie wasn't bad in small does. Neither was Zoran Talley.

Marial Shayok was an absolute stud -- up there with Kane, White, and Brockington.

Michael Jacobson was a decent starting center in the Big 12.

Rasir Bolton was/is a stud talent. His role with Gonzaga proves it.

Jalen Coleman-Lands was a bright spot on an awful team.

But yes, nobody in the history of the program has a more demonstrated record of bringing talent to Ames than TJ across all three of his tenures with the program now.

You must've not watched his linked video above. Dude dunked all over Duke. I think he can play at this level. All he has to do is replace Conditt's production, which I am confident he can do and then some.

Who’s to say Conditt wouldn’t be 2x Ivy League Defensive Player Of The Year if he played at Brown? Gainey’s numbers aren’t impressive for that lower level of competition.
I'd go out on a limb and say he wouldn't. He has been ok this year but was god-awful defensively his first 3 years here. Never in the right position, always chasing blocks and leaving his assignment open for offensive rebounds or an easy put back.

Shayok was the gem. Bolton had talent, Jake good effort, and the rest were OK at best, IMO.

JCL won HM-all Big 12 his one year in Ames.

Something Matt Thomas did twice -- Matt never made 3rd/2nd/1st team.

So I think "OK at best" is underselling him. He's a good player. He'd start on this team over Kalscheur.

You'd be right if you'd point out there were some awful ones, though...

Jordan Ashton was a PWO who went on scholarship -- not a Big 12 player.

Merrill Holden didn't belong in the Big 12 either.

Ray Kasongo is a bogeyman we use to scare the children.

Jeff Beverly is the GOAT.

Hans Brase would have been a good player but was never healthy.

I hope Prentiss Nixon is still chuckin' step-back turn-around 28' shots somewhere.

Javan Johnson was meh.

Tyler Harris was not absolutely awful -- best one on this list -- but that isn't saying much.

Blake Hinson never existed.

Man, I thought for sure Kasongo, Ashton, and Hallice Cooke were Hoiberg players but I was dead wrong. They were pretty much all '15-'16 players or transfers.

In mild defense of Prentiss Nixon, he transferred the year the 3pt line moved back and I don't think his 3pt % drop was anticipated due to that.

Tre King intrigues me a lot! He seems to be meshing well with the guys on the bench. I know he played for Northern Kentucky and was averaging around 16 ppg, but he’s a little unknown as far as what else he can do. Think he’ll be an impact transfer next year. Obviously if he were the caliber of Brockington that would be great.

Id still really like to know what he brings to the table offensively. If he's got anything inside he'll be huge next year

Gainey would take Robert Jones’ lunch, stuff him in a locker, then slam home another alley oop. We haven’t had an athletic big as athletic as he is since.. Lard? McKay?

Thanks for the list of the not-so-great SP transfers.
Another way to put where we are today-- could anyone see TJ now bring in a guy like Jeff Beverly?

You are correct. But Brockington started his college career at St. Bonny. Now that may not be IVY.......but it's not Big 12 either. And Penn. State isn't exactly Michigan State.

Recognizing talent at a lower level is why coaches get the big bucks. How do we know Gainey may not be an impact player? You never know.

I am not sure the three-point line moving back affected Nixon that much. That kid firmly believed the ladies love it when you drain it from beyond NBA range and there aren’t any points to be had save for style points.

We’d be a lock #1 seed with Beverly on this team.
