WILLIAMS: Analyzing Iowa State’s NCAA Tournament situation after a big week

When we made it in '92 at 5-9, that's a 36% winning percentage in league. 6-12 now would be 33%, so it's not that much different - the biggest thing is that no one has ever made it at -6 in the league, but it was bound to happen sometime soon with more leagues moving to 18 or 20 conference games. We just might be trendsetters again.
Like I said before that team beat the 3 seed to make the semifinals.

It's really more about the insecurity of some on this board (you included) that feel threatened by differing opinions and an have uncontrollable need to lash out.
No one is lashing out at you my God. We are trying to educate you because just because you have an opinion doesn’t mean it can’t be proven wrong. We have laid out the reason your opinion is one that you shouldn’t be worrying about because it’s based in fallacies.

Good luck to you and hope you come to accept others opinions too, which you seem to not do yourself but lash out at others for. Kind of weird.

You mean the team that had a lot of good wins got into the tournament? Shocking.
He’s on a roll let’s see how it goes for him here. Sad part is he is now almost cheering against his own team so he can be proven “right” which is hilarious to think about. Likely won’t admit it but if we are 6-12 and sitting there on selection Sunday, he will be hoping we don’t get in so he can jump back here to get his jollies off. Again this is popcorn-level entertainment right now.

I haven't said anything to lash out at other opinions I just gave mine. I woke up to 15 negatives in the mailbox. You can't prove an opinion wrong until it plays out. Why are you so threatened by mine?

If nothing else is true, I can guarantee you not one single person is THREATENED by your opinion. Good lord.

It’s wrong because your claim that conference record has any merit on selection is in fact wrong. That is not a criteria used by the committee and has been said ad nauseum by said committees over the years. That’s all.

And that your claim of being minus-7 in conference if we go 6-12 and lose first game in KC makes us 6-13 or viewed that way. That’s just flat out incorrect.

If we don’t get an at large bid it will be due to us probably losing out or finishing 6-12 and having a few bid stealers from conference tournaments.

If you’re waking to countless notifications, all disagreeing with you…maybe pause and realize maybe they’re right and you’re wrong.

If we finish 2-2 with home wins and road losses (most likely imo) for a 7-11 conf record, then the season for me will have come down to the home losses against KSU and TCU. Those were unacceptable, and the only reason I will walk away from the regular season a little dissatisfied. Turning those should-be wins into losses possibly moved us from a 5 or 6 seed to a 7 or 8 seed.
This is just stupid. I came into the season with about the highest expectations of anyone around here. 7-11 is about at the highest I thought was even possible.

If anyone is disappointed in this season they have no clue what they are taking about. You can be disappointed in specific games I know I’m disappointed in those games but the season as a whole has already been a success.

Just my opinion, but I think 1 more win and we’re in Dayton. 2 more and we are solidly in the regular field.

i agree with a caveat. I think 1 win, but 2+ wins in KC means we are in the regular field. That would mean a win in the 8/9 game and over the 1 seed.

That is a valid point, I believe back in the eighties victories in the Big 8 Tournament were examined
Neither does 20 wins (although this case it should) and that keeps getting thrown around.

I'm counting at least 4 NCAA tourney appearances that don't happen for ISU if those are required.

Yes! The 20-win marker was a convenient round-number for inclusion (at least for power-league teams) back when regular season typically was 27 games. It just happened to coincide with having a strong enough resume, in most cases ("Get to 20 and you're probably safe.")

1 more win all but assures we aren’t playing in the 8/9 game. That game will be some combination of WVU/OU/TCU.
That way we can be like the Hawkeye fans and say the 8-9 game is the first round and not basically a play in game. So the 7th place team makes the second round.

I hope we don't have to find out who's wrong.
If we go 6-13 in conf and in KC and get left out, it will not be because we are 6-13 in league play. It will be because we are 19-13. Swap Xavier and Creighton for a couple league wins and it would make no difference. The committee has said this explicitly.

It sounds crazy, but I think we could lose out and still be in the tournament. I just don't think they'll find forty-some teams with a better resume, especially with the ACC having a down year.
Of course, if we're playing that poorly, we'd probably score 35 pts in the first round and wish we'd gone to the NIT instead, but that's another story.
