why do stormin and roch keep bringing up Prohm? He was a terrible coach and nobody wants him back. That’s actually more of an insult to TJ that they constantly compare him to prohm. Based on this first year I think a better comparison is to Fran McCaffrey. Up until now only Fran had the ability to completely collapse mid season like this.

Because he left the cupboard absolutely bare. For ***** sake we have 3 returning scholarship players from a 2-22 team. The consequences of employing Prohm will hit TJ and staff for the next 1-2 years.

TJ and staff are far from criticism for how they've handled this stretch of games, but it's absolutely relevant to discuss the state of the program TJ's predecessor left it for him.

I thought OP was gonna ask CW to make out with him…and I was all popcorn gif for it.

No one was discussing it when we were #8 in the polls.

We caught a lot of lucky breaks. The stifling defense is now being well prepared for by our opponents. We have modest offensive talent. And a few of our players who couldn’t miss in many games now can’t hit the ocean. We were obviously overrated. People doing the rankings believe their own hype.

And people believing the rankings are the same who were shouting 'but ranked #7!' as the football team went 7-6.

I agree, it’s at least 2 years, probably 3, before we can accurately judge this program.

He’s gotta get better on the sidelines, though. He’s never going to recruit well enough to overcome those shortcomings. I believe he will, but it’s going to require humility, and working to develop those habits he talks about

I don’t keep a list around at home of coaching candidates. I really do wish Pollard actually conducted a full blown interview of candidates instead of basically just bringing on TJ, who has failed at UNLV and hasn’t proven himself as a coach. Oh well, you’ll eventually understand in a couple of years.

Nah, I can understand now.
There's holes in the coaching/approach.

Get better players, things can change. And we'll see how that goes l.

Who should be the next coach at ISU?

Before you 'dumb' the post like a 4th grader, what is the answer?

And not just 'well they didn't do a search' because that already happened.

Who is the next legit candidate that Jamie Pollard can dial up and bring to Ames to return ISU to its glory years of generally good basketball teams?

Maybe a coach who actually had success in the Mountain West conference?

I know this was to make a point.

But with all the moving parts with the athletic department at Iowa State, it is really scary to think about what would happen if TJ fails, and if this next group doesn’t sustain the momentum in football.

The good news is that neither of those questions will be answered for at least three years. So we can sit back and enjoy the ride, and trust the process

Football and realignment carry most things though don't they?

Basketball just feels like a perk with the big money maker.

Only different, because historically Iowa State’s athletic success has been primarily on the hardwood.

What were the expectations when this team was undefeated and ranked #8 in the country after beating many NCAA tournament teams?

This team has regressed. Significantly.

Matt Campbell tanked our program. Bring Back CPR. :jimlad::rolleyes:

Those were the expectations of bandwagon jumpers who failed to watch every game this season.

Agree to disagree that expectations to make the NCAA tournament after being undefeated in the non-con with several very good wins + wins against Tech and Texas + hanging with Baylor + almost winning at KU are “bandwagon jumpers”.

This is an epic collapse that doesn’t happen very often in college basketball. If people want to make themselves feel better because this team had no expectations going into the season - fine. But you cannot ignore a collapse as bad as this based on where we were a month ago.

Anyone who believes this clearly didn't see the Jackson State and Alabama State games. This statement is hyperbole to the max.
Those games don't mean anything. You try coming off emotional wins against teams like Iowa then turn around and play some scrub program during finals week.

Plenty of good ISU teams have struggled with teams that bad.
Might have been the Royce or Kane-Ejim team that barley beat Mississippi Valley State then turned around 2 weeks later and ran Kansas out of the building.

Yes, Royce season.

ISU's non-con SoS is now 329th in Kenpom. It was designed to give them some easy wins to build confidence.

Conclusions and expectations based on performance against the 329th ranked non-con SoS may have been a mistake. ISU hasn't regressed, they have just started playing a much tougher schedule. They aren't a "very good team that is free falling". They are a team with a substandard rotation of bigs at the P6 level and only one consistent scoring threat who isn't big on passing.
You're a complete idiot if you think we played a weak non-conference schedule, especially in comparison to alot of other Big 12 teams.
In fact, ISU is showing up still in mock brackets as a 10 seed even after yesterday. You think we are still a tournament team because of our stellar 3-9 conference record?

Basketball programs are not made in a couple months. This takes years. For example, an epic collapse would involve a program making six straight NCAAs in a decade but by the end of the decade having two consecutive 20 loss seasons.

Winning neutral games against Xavier and Memphis + winning at Creighton + beating Tech and Texas + hanging with Baylor + nearly winning at KU are not “lucky breaks”.

We played well for 30 mins yesterday. We were aggressive, took care of the ball, and defending well. And then we completely went away from what worked for the last 10 mins and pissed away a 15 point lead at home against the worst team (besides us) in the league. I don’t know if it’s mostly coaching or execution but yesterday was a big failure in a huge spot for this team.
