If I was going to build a Hy-Vee from scratch:

Scan & Go. I tried this at the new Grimes Hy-Vee and it worked surprisingly well. I think instead of using my phone, I'd have handheld devices attached to the cart. Self checkout is also fine but tie at least one employee down by chain to be within 10 feet. I've waited way to long to get id'd for buying beer.

Liquor. Some Hy-Vee's in the metro have the best craft beer selection in town. Overall they do a good job compared to competitors. Some Fareways have improved but still no comparison.

Bakery-Overall, I think they do a good job for a grocery store.

Produce-It's fine, usually better than any other grocery store.

Food-Chinese and cheap breakfast. People don't go to Hy-Vee to sit down and eat. Old people go to shoot the **** and have some cheap breakfast. It's hard to **** up breakfast. They also do Chinese well. In Cedar Falls we had a pizza place that wasn't bad and had great bread sticks. In summary, nothing fancy.

Food Aisles-Can't really complain. They usually have the best selection in town. My wife buys a lot of weird **** and it's the one thing that keeps her going back.

Meat-Can't complain about the product but Fareway has the customer service and knowledge down.

Customer Service-I don't know if this is me getting old or just people changing but I think it's nearly impossible to provide good customer service at retail anymore. When I worked at Hy-Vee, they would let you know that the customer was always right even when they were wrong and your #1 job was to be friendly. That just doesn't exist anywhere any longer. Costco probably has the best EE's but those are adults.

Non Foods-I know this is the big money maker but no clothes, shoes, etc. It's not your world and it's been proven time and time again that you're just not good at it.

Healthy-I don't eat healthy but it seems like they have nice dedicated aisles.

Stocking-Whatever happened to night stock? Why are there 20 people in the aisle stocking shelves while I'm trying to shop?

Delivery-Start over. It's terrible on about every level. Employees shopping in the aisles and in the way. Employees that have never shopped in their life so they have no clue. When I mark "no substitute", don't ******* text me and ask me about substitutes. Nearly every order something is missing that I paid for. I understand with your $100/year service I can get a quick response but you know what's better? Get it right so I don't have to call. Amazon hasn't messed up an order of mine in 10 years.

Can Redemption-Go back to the ones where you could just dump them all in at once, it was so much easier. I know you don't want it to be easier but I am your customer.

I was such a Hy-Vee fanboy that I kept my Hy-Vee 401k an extra 5 years after I left because I wanted to be invested in the company. A few of the people I use to work with are now in the C suite and I'd love to know how they feel about everything.

If I was starting a Hy-Vee from scratch I would build a Fareway.

I won't say they jumped the shark until this new show leads to a new sex toy section.

I almost said this a few days ago. We are just a couple years away from HyVee having a Dilly Department.

This is something I really notice now every time I go to HyVee. There are always big stocking carts in half the aisles, blocking a good portion of the store during the day. That’s weird, right? That didn’t used to be the case?

Half-baked idea I haven't really thought through, but I wonder if the future is to have hubs specifically for online order fulfillment to keep that traffic away from regular stores.

Really? I guess the only time I step foot in one is usually Sunday afternoon/night and the entire store is wiped. I don’t think they stock during the day at the old Ankeny one. Not a cart to be found other than the online shoppers goingnhard.

There actually used to be a fulfillment center in Des Moines. I worked there for a little while. That's where all online orders were filled for all the stores in central Iowa. Online shopping was popular then but not as big as it is now. Even then, we'd do anywhere from 500-1200 orders a day. Ironically, they closed that fulfillment center in Feb/March 2020 and moved all the online shopping to in the stores.

Our store seems to have stocking activities going on at most times but none worse than if you happen to go to the dairy section Sunday morning after church. You almost can't get down the aisles.

Mrs. Velo worked for years at a Hy-Vee and she is just beside herself whenever she sees daytime stocking.

Seems weird on the surface, but in reality it's image advertising. The company seems like it's one big test market with all the crap they fling against the wall, but based on my observations there may be a method to the madness.

What it appears they are trying to do with all this stuff is to create a premium brand that's a trendy pick where they can get consumers to pay a premium price for their goods....much in the same way Target has positioned itself against Walmart. It's definitely turning into a grocery store for women, and with the way women will spend on themselves, a few bucks more for groceries isn't squat. And they've been chewing up most everyone that isn't Walmart/Target along the way.

I'm trying to figure out if they're really that astute or if management is that much of a cluster****. The Market Grilles cost a ton of money and were a colossal failure. But on the other hand, it wouldn't surprise me if they were a national brand in 20 more years.
Local manager said they were expanding into Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky.
