NFL: ***2022 NFL Season Thread***

I don't buy that. I think they were going to play conservative and if that allowed them to get into field goal range, then great. So while I don't think they were "playing for a tie" per se, I don't think they were going to do anything the risk it being worse than a tie.
Attempting a field goal risks something worse than a tie. Field goal block, return for TD. The chance is minute but still non-zero.

The Chargers finish a strong number two to the Colts in the "we're not worthy" sweepstakes.

When this game was getting wild last night I could only think of this famous line:

Forcing a tie when you had the chance to win to me would have just cheapened how the Raiders and Chargers would have got into the playoffs. If you are a true competitor you don't play for a tie you play for a win so I am glad it ended the way it did.

I say it everytime it happens, but the idea there could be a tie in the NFL is completely stupid.

I'm ready for the old way though put twelve minutes on the clock and keep playing till there's a winner.

My OT rules:

Winner of coin toss names a yard-line they think they can score a TD from with normal rules. Loser can either say a further-out yard line or say "prove it". Go back and forth until one team either says "prove it" or "our 1 yard line". Score a TD to win. Go.

I wonder if the NFL somehow institutes a "no ties in Week 18" rule to avoid the scenario of ever playing for a tie.
First, why? It was high drama last night. The overnight ratings were great. It provided a great storyline and plenty of drama. Why exactly do you think the NFL would be looking to change anything?

Second, they're not going to alter the rules for just one week of the regular season. If games are allowed to end in a tie during week one, the rules need to be the same for every other week in the regular season. Playoffs are different as it's a single elimination tournament, but the rules have to be consistent throughout the regular season

I imagine they are thrilled with how it turned out, but there was a real possibility of colluding to tie in a nationally televised game. As someone on Twitter pointed out, if nothing else these guys get hefty bonus checks if the team makes the wildcard game. I'd have to imagine a real discussion was had about conceding a tie to avoid the risk of a loss.

And as for altering the rules for the last game, I'm kind of surprised there isn't more discussion about going EPL style and all playing at once. It seems to me a competitive advantage to know what you have to do to get in. I know it will never happen because they have to maximize viewership, but it seems unfair that some teams know what they have to do to get in while some don't.

Right integrity could be at play.

But is “trying to win” already being abandoned the last week? GB had no incentive to win yesterday. That really only helped the lions draft position

I really doubt there was any real possibility of the two teams colluding to end the game in a tie, that kind of thing would be seriously damaging to everyone in charge. Noting that playing for a tie is different than colluding with the other team to end the game in a tie.

Would it though? I think the players each get something like $20k for a wild card game, which for most of them isn't a big deal but is a good chunk of money. For many coaches even a wildcard appearance creates job security, and with as wide open as things are this year you could totally see a wildcard team getting hot and making a run.

I would guess more discussions were had about just agreeing to somehow wind up in a tie than you may think. I imagine the Chargers are wishing right now they'd pushed that idea...

Two teams colluding to fix a game? Yeah, I think they'd run into some issues.

I guess I don't see how you could enforce any "issues" when it's done for competitive reasons. You aren't fixing a game for any purpose other than ensuring you both get to the playoffs.

Just to be clear, you are talking about the Raiders talking to the Chargers to collude and end the game in a tie? Or are you talking about a situation where one team on it's own determines that it may be safer to play for the tie than it is to go for the win?

There are so many things that would have to play out perfectly for two teams to collude to tie the game and have it actually work. Not to mention that neither team could be sure that the other would actually follow through with their end of the bargain. Two teams full of hyper-competitive dudes, playing for the playoffs yes, but also playing for job security, and performance bonuses and pride. What you're suggesting is ridiculously far fetched. It's the kind of thing fans speculate about because it's fun to talk "What if" scenarios, but it's not really a threat to happen in reality.

You're probably right. If I'm a fan of either team I'd want you to do whatever was necessary to extend your season into the playoffs. But I guess I'm not surprised they chose to play it straight up either.

Iowa State beats Texas and the NFL Playoffs. Great sports weekend. My team didn't even make the post-season, but I love NFL playoff football.
