Greetings from a Clemson fan....

I can certainly relate to the close games; Clemson stopped GT I think at the 2 yard line with under a minute to go, Syracuse missed a game tying FG with under a minute to go, Boston College fumbled a snap on about our 20 with around a minute to go and we stopped Louisville on 4th and goal with under 30 seconds to go........that's enough excitement for one season...
"ISU losses this year.
-Iowa just flat out beat us yet again.
-Baylor: ISU scored TD with 30 seconds to go and missed 2 pt conversion to lose by 2.
-WVU: weird game yet still had the ball was driving late when we had some poor clock management & had a hail mary from the 30 go incomplete. Lose by 7.
-TX Tech: ISU tied the game with a field goal late. Tech drives to midfield and makes 62 yard FG at the gun to win it.
-OU: Drive down to red zone; Purdy overthrows open TE on 4 & 10. Lose by 7."
Thank you, Shadow.

Compare and contrast the opposition. It certainly shows a much different level of competition.

We were in the US Navy together, NAS Lemoore, California (1985-1989), marriage still holding...:). I don't know that much about the rivalry between Iowa/Iowa State......is it that heated? Our biggest rival is of course SC, and the roots of the hatred are sometime a city vs. a country school kind of thing; is the State/Iowa rivalry similar?

It is a long and bitter rivalry. Athletically it has been back and forth, with the FB series being cancelled for many yrs then resuming. On a deeper scale Hawk alums ran the legislature for years and tried to kill off ISU, tried to turn into satellite school almost. But we have survived all that and are doing ok though this whole college FB realignment thing has caused some concern about long term financing of the A.D. Well this probably wasn't the answer you were expecting but it's what you got.

Looking forward to your insights on our upcoming game and more about Clemson lore and traditions if you want to share.

A Cyclone mentioned in a different thread that a fair number of Hawkeye fans would be attending the Clemson game; if so, who would they root for?

Oh Clemson for sure. I've never yet met a Hawk who cheers for ISU in games they don't have a stake in, they don't like us and we don't like them. Some of their grads are ok, but those fans that show up in Hawk gear at ISU games are always cheering for a ISU loss and a chance to smart-off about it.

Have been a Clemson fan since 1972, and the Best Man in my wedding was an Iowa Hawkeye fan from Des Moines. So I am somewhat familiar with Iowa State football and have visited your great state several times. I think the average Clemson fan is very excited about playing you guys, and all indications are that it will be a very, very close game. Similar to the Cyclones, our strength is our D while our offense is erratic. I've been scouting Iowa State as most of your games are on Youtube; the teams are very, very similar. Hope everyone has a great time at the game!

Welcome to the site. If you're going to the game make sure to introduce yourself to some Cyclone fans. We're a rather welcoming group. You'll also run into quite a few hawks since their game is in Orlando as well. They will also be nice to you, as they have an ulterior motive in rooting on Clemson to beat us. They're a vile, nasty group as a collective fan base. Don't be taken for a fool with that bunch.

I was not pleased that were heading back to Orlando, only because from our time there in 2019, seems more like a city for families rather than tailgate/party people such as our group. But the match-up with Clemson makes it all the worthwhile and that is the ultimate testament to our respect for your program. Good luck in the game!

Not sure ISU v Iowa rivalry is as much “city” versus country, but there are definitely some cultural differences.

First, Iowa is majority Chicago area kids not smart enough to get into Illinois. For clarity, being “from Chicago” basically means “I’m from Illinois”. Anything within 100 miles is fair game

Many grew up spoiled and look down their noses at smaller towns and agricultural roots of our university. Also, within the state schools you have Iowa with the medical school, law school, business school, etc. ISU more ag, engineering, design, architecture, etc. So that fuels their elitism even though the state schools are intentionally set up to not be duplicative in many regards. Despite their supposed academic elitism on their part, most are too stupid to understand that.

what makes it funny is that they slap an ANF sticker on their helmets (America Needs Farmers) to proudly show their support then forget about it 5 seconds later when they go back to making fun of ISU kids for growing up on a farm.

worst part is that most Iowa fans didn’t go there - or to college at all. We call them Tavern Hawks. Right now, theyre probably on the same bar stool they’ve been sitting for 30 years reminiscing about when they almost f**ed the prom queen after a football game in high school. Ironically, the Chicago kids that actually went to Iowa generally look down their noses at these types of people, but they somehow look past it because they all wear the same Iowa football hat with ANF on the side.

Running joke is “what do Iowa and Iowa State fans have in common? None of them graduated from the University of Iowa”. I suspect that may be similar with Clemson/SC.

their fans are mostly fair weather, oscillating between their head coach being the second coming of Jesus Christ or need to be fired because they’ll never get them to the promised land.

they’ve literally never lost a game in any sport. Sometimes they just decide to give a game away. Or one of their stars is injured. Or the other team got lucky. Or the refs. Etc. We’ll, maybe they did get beat but remember that game years ago?

They are our “super bowl” in every sport, but if we do lose to them it’s because their team was too hyped and buckled under the pressure of being expected to beat us. So kind of like their super bowl, I guess.

Sometimes their coaches’ kids are really bad at basketball, live in subsidized student housing while daddy makes 10 mil a year coaching football, and/or are racist pieces of $hit that somehow get an OC job despite scoring 9 offensive touchdowns in 7 games.

They accuse us of recruiting “thugs” and “criminals” when they have a famously long rap sheet in Iowa City. Thankfully their coaches, AD, university officials, etc provide them good cover.

They think they’re a blue blood but are actually far from it. They go to conference championship games (sometimes) having played no ranked teams, get blown out by 39 points, and then cry about the referees or the other coach running up the score.

They can tell you all about when they almost won the national championship in 2005 or 1984 like it was yesterday. Most of them have at least one child named Hayden (coach of said team from 1984) or Nile (who their stadium was named after a long long time ago).

Ashton Kutcher kind of went to college there. No one really liked him, but it’s still super cool because, you know, no other B list celebrity ever went to college. They’ll tell you all about the time they saw him at a frat party if you ask.

cyclone fanatic, what else am I missing?

Those WVU and TTU losses........ man those shouldn't have happened. Could lump Baylor in that group too. The Iowa one we straight up played awful for 3 quarters.

Clemson and the U of SC have a similar history; the SC legislature didn't want to support 2 major schools, while the governor at that time supported Clemson as a future Land Grant college. In the ensuing vote Clemson College was founded by a mere handful of votes. The governor, Ben Tillman, infuriated by the lack of votes, laid a famous curse on the U of SC, now known as "The Chicken Curse". He cursed SC for eternity, threatened to stick a pitchfork in anyone who didn't vote for the new school, and subsequently became known as "Pitchfork" Ben Tillman. At any rate, the rivalry was off and running. In the ensuing years, the rivalry was sometimes called "Culture vs. Agriculture", a city vs. country duel...

I would certainly like to meet fans from both of those schools; I'm a native SC fellow born and raised on a 4th generation farm, and so it was cool when I drove up to Iowa years ago and saw all those picturesque farms and surrounding countryside....

Iowa State is the land grant school in Iowa (actually the first land grant) so we have the Ag college. Most of the Hawkeye fans will end up wandering the aisles of Walmart after their Burger King shift.

One of the questions on the U of Iowa admission form asks if your parents are related. If not you are not accepted.

Clemson is also a Land Grant school, part of which is on the former homestead of John C. Calhoun, US Vice President. Clemson itself is named after Thomas Greene Clemson, who married Calhoun's daughter. My dad was a 1950 graduate of Clemson back when it was an all male military school...

I would also like to emphasize our esteemed Veterinary Medicine College. It is one of the top Vet Med colleges in the US and it collaborates very closely with the USDA's National Animal Disease Center that is located in Ames. https://www.ars.usda.gov/midwest-area/ames/nadc/

Our Department of Home Economics (Now the College of Human Sciences) was one of the first Home Economics programs established in the world in 1872. Of course, very early on the U of Iowa lawyers in the Iowa Legislature tried to steal that department from us as they wanted more women on their campus (you know how lawyers are).

The women would have none of that (as they were perfectly happy at Iowa State, preferring farmers and engineers over lawyers) and put up such a howl and protest that the Legislature dropped the idea. We successfully fought that off but the U of Iowa has tried to steal many other things from us since then and has largely failed. They did manage to steal Dan Gable from us.

Years ago, Iowa played SC in the Outback Bowl and beat them pretty good; now a lot of Hawks are in love with SC, and often show up on the Gamecocks message board, in a kind of weird love affair...

They show up on every message board. Any concerns from Clemson you might be down a couple asst coaches for the game? Any players ?

Welcome,
ISU also has many names for the University of Iowa which, of course, are much more creative than Moo U, but I will defer to my fellow Cyclones, as some younger fans maybe reading the thread as it refers to our bowl game, which many junior Cyclone fans are excited about! However, we did play them in Basketball yesterday evening, and our student section had one particular Squakeye in their sights, as he had been involved in a bar altercation with a former ISU athlete, had insulted our arena by leaving his shoes by the players bench 2 years ago with a message to our University written on them, plus he tried (and Failed) to imitate one of our former( now NBA) players, thus a chant was quickly composed that had an F word plus his last name by 5000 students, available on utube if you so desire. ESPN has probably dropped the game from their replays by now.:jimlad:

@Lemoore85 My personal favorite way to reference the other main team in the state is "Hokeye." And really exaggerate the "Hok." Think of the sound that led to the phrase "Hock up a loogie." If you don't have to spit afterwards, you haven't said it correctly.

We also refer to them as the "Team Out East" or "Eastern Iowa University" because we are The Iowa State University.

It is also worth noting that our Tight End Room is filled with high achieving engineers (last year we had 3). Charlie Kolar just won the Academic Heisman. And they are not just book smart. Charlie Kolar, Chase Allen, and last year's Dylan Soehner are extremely fun, clever, analytical about football, and great in interviews.

So, you're a Navy guy? I believe ISU is the only institution in the state with NROTC. Say, we could have a battleship 'game' too, maybe? USS Iowa:

Iowa dec1944.jpg

Our coach, Matt Campbell, had some very nice things to say about Clemson the other day. (Guys, didn't Venables come to ISU a few years ago to explore our 3-3-5 defense? And, it looks like CMC has traveled to Clemson, too.)

Going to be a long day for your boys. Is there any one left to coach there? Hope you enjoyed your run looks like your “elite” days are over.
