Rumor has it ND was telling Kelly he needed to win a Natty in the next 3 years or be done. This move was not just for the money, but for a re-set of the clock.
LOL and how many years is he going to get at LSU?

With all these crazy coaching salaries, I would think KF would be threatening to leave again if Barta didn’t back the Brinks truck up.

Generally agree, but I also think in today's climate there's something to be said for trying to keep some recruiting continuity if Freeman is truly a star in that regard. I think ND sees what's happening with OU's recruits after their coach blindsided them.
Also, recruiting to ND isn't as easy as it is at the other blue bloods.

I would be shocked if ND hired someone who's never been a head coach.
Notre Dame fans witnessing their team murder Campbells in a bowl game probably doesn’t help their perception of him either.ND Blue Gold message board is not supporting Campbell.
Personally, I feel like Marcus Freeman is a no brainer, rising star in the profession. They'd be idiots not to hire him.
ND has the #4 recruiting class this year and #2 for 2023 so far. Any hire but Freeman means starting over on both of those. I think that will be a huge bonus in the Freeman column when ND sits down to think about going with him vs. interviewing Fickell or Campbell.

who does VT hire at this point?

Don’t you think they’ll make ficklell or Campbell keep freeman?
I'm assuming their first choice is Fickell. Urban has long been on their list too.
