Agree. We pay starting warehouse inspectors $21 / hr and only skills needed are show up on time, be able to read, and open a box.
And we pay 90% of bcbs health ins plus 401k match. Its hard to find good workers.

We are going into a cycle where workers have power and they can and should ask for more of the pie. And i say that as a small biz owner, im certainly no marxist lol.

You're ignoring that the boxes are 80 pounds and is in a non hvac warehouse. Warehouse work is hard on your body and boring as ****.

True. Even if a company were fully invested in planning for something like this, and was actually good at that kind of planning, those skills don't just come together in a few minutes of demonstration.

I am pretty sure a lot of these office people have never used a dewalt drill before. But hey grab your power tools and don’t forget your welding helmet let’s hoist these 1/2 ton steel parts and put them together. Bob you are in charge of installing the 300lb tires. Cathy you hook up the wire harness for the gps system. We got this!

You think office workers just suck on their thumb all day and night and have never used a drill in their entire life?

Jesus Christ.

I can change tires, brakes, and oil on my car doesn’t mean I have the skills to go get a job as a mechanic at Midas. Think about it

If you can do those things, you would qualify at a lot of places. That's another occupation that's having issues.

I had heard from someone I work with whose spouse works at Deere financial that they are offering $300 a day on top of the pay they are already making and it goes to $500 a day if you can weld to go work at the plant.

That sounds made up on the welding part. Like, I'm a pretty good welder. I don't think I'm a professional welder. Maybe in a couple days or so I could be sufficient but I don't think I'd be churning out the quality needed.

Yep, my sister is an HR rep. Happens to know how to drive a forklift from a job in college and is getting that extra cash. It's a nice big bonus. They aren't being asked to work any extra hours at this point and she gets to choose her hours.

She's in the foundry in Waterloo and they are only going to finish partially completed parts and ship out the back log, there's no plans to actually manufacture anything at this point.

Building a car is a whole lot easier than repairing a car. You're asking people to do a repetitive task not build it from start to finish. If it were rocket science they probably wouldn't have been waiving the high school diploma requirement at the job fairs this summer.

Yes, from a pure leverage standpoint it would be tough to find a better time to strike or renegotiate.

I keep seeing this being said. And I get it. But also, all major manufacturers are having an awful time trying to get parts to build their product. Deere would be no different. Maybe Deere is enjoying the free, temporary layoff while the supply chain sorts itself out

Both sides may think they have the upper hand. And this could go a while...

Hate to be the poor SOB farmer who gets a $300K tractor or combine put together by office staff. What could possibly go wrong?

This...there will be extra compensation for them. To pretend there won't be is unrealistic.

Not only would you have to be certified as a welder but you would need hundreds of welders for all the different parts. A few people cannot do it by themselves. Like you said It’s not same as welding in your garage as a hobby. There’s a thing called osha that deere would have to abide by too.
