Waiting for the inevitability of Lions fans around me whining "he never played like this for us", so I can retort "yeah - because the Lions as an organization sucks."
For years Lions fans have been seeking the "Tom Brady" or "Aaron Rodgers" that would take a talented but dysfunctional team at best (in the past) or a team with little to no talent whatsoever on it (currently) to playoff victories and championships, not realizing it doesn't work that way. Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers in their prime would not win with the Lions because the organization itself isn't set up for success. These are the same fans that were thinking with Stafford gone, replaced by Goff, would be competing for the North title. Meanwhile, Stafford looks nearly all-world today, whereas so far Goff hasn't looked good at all.
I am a huge Rams fan this season because I want Lions fans eating crow about how all of their teams' problems were caused by Stafford.
I've been saying for years that Stafford is a high tier, if not great QB skillwise. For a while there he even had some great WRs -- but literally nothing else over the entire roster. For his whole career. On top of that, Stafford got the s*** beat of out him some years, yet has been extremely durable.
You aren't gonna win much with a good, even great QB and a few WRs...and nothing else.
I thought he got away with one in slo-mo, but it looked pretty convincing in real time.
Vikings played a great game today. Defense was bad in the first half and shored up. Offense was consistently good the whole day. Kirk played well, OL did...okay. Mattison played excellent, Conklin played excellent. DL play especially in the second half was solid. Kicker kicked well.
Not much to b**** about this game. And LMAO that punt, way to end it.
First, Stafford has never had a legitimate running game, which means teams sat on pass, daring the Lions to run on them (and still couldn't) - and despite that Stafford was still considered a high-tier QB based on performance.
Second, people don't realize the number of injuries Stafford has played with over the years because his OL couldn't protect him. Two years ago he was playing with a fractured spine. He has often played with broken fingers. I can't remember the last season he wasn't playing injured, yet the guy has never placed blame nor made excuses.
Third, Stafford has played with a number of good receivers, but has only played with one great one - Calvin Johnson. And while Johnson is an all-time great, he's really overrated as he should have been so much greater - and it's not Stafford's fault, although Johnson likes to lay all that blame on him. Johnson is a major prima donna that while possessed an unusually large catch radius, would whine that Stafford didn't always provide him with the "perfect" pass to catch. Not to mention it was always questionable whether he'd be playing any given week as he was always dealing with nagging injuries.
I think the biggest mistake Stafford ever made in his career was re-signing with the Lions several years back. And while he was made the highest paid QB in the league doing so, it also showed his loyalty as he wanted to win in Detroit. but the organization never built a team around him, through both stubbornness and incompetence.
It's all dependent on the dline and they played well this game. Lot's of new pieces and they finally might be getting used to each other.
I mean, they still are a bottom-5-ish defense in the league at this point. One good half won't change that. Like @cycloneG called out, the DL showing up well in the second half really killed any rhythm the SEA offense was in prior to then. Both sides of the ball for SEA looked very out-of-sorts compared to their first few drives.
All this being said, Vikes still earned a solid win today and exceeded expectations for the game by far.
Props to them for calling that without profanities. I would be cussing like a sailor on either side of this result.
