I have lived in Montana, Tennessee, Kansas (KC area), Iowa and Wisconsin and I can't put Iowa above KS or WI. Probably even with Montana, depending on what you want out of it. I'm surprised that you rank Iowa behind KY, I have found that the South is truly a ********, including Florida.
meh, its the midsouth. check out lexington. best city i've lived in. if they legalized weed I would move back.

Oh, I lived in Nashville, same thing, but get out of the city and watch out. Back then, even a huge part of the city was straight hood. We partied a lot and had a good time.
Missoula. Cool town, kind of isolated. Montana has no sales tax , so their roads and stuff are really rough. A rest area in Montana is a pit toilet. I would live there again for sure if I was loaded. Billings and Bozeman are also cool.
Iowa dumpy vs. Montana and Tennessee dumpy are no comparison. Iowa doesn't have anything close to the poverty level of Tennessee. I saw people living in shacks with no running water. Poverty in the South is next level. The Reservations in Montana are also like nothing anyone in Iowa has ever seen. That stuff makes Missouri look like the French Riviera.
yaya. i've been to montana lots (family cabin in glacier). We were looking at houses in any of those cities and LOL no way in hell.
Hunting ,fishing, biking, hiking, good craft brew and restaurant scene. 3 hrs to DM, Madison, Twin Cities
Tons of livestock in NWIA, livestock is really good for local economies. Not arguing environmental stuff, just talking good for businesses.
For as much money that's in the front range in CO just about 40 minutes west of Ft. Collins are some interesting places. I didn't know if I was in a convenience store or an episode of Hoarders.
There's parts of the northern WI outside of the tourist towns that are pretty rugged too. But the people seem happy or content so whatever.
HA. that is a western USA thing..,,,, idk what or why but almost every rural home is just completely loaded with crap and scrap.
I'd love to see an article or a deep dive into the western culture and why this occurs.
Rural Washington State and rural Oregon are the same exact way. Beautiful country, beautiful places to live, decent houses/cars, but just piled with crap that they haven’t bothered touching for 30 years. I was surprised by this when we were there.
The weekends and evenings don't though depending what you like doing and possibly age.
Otherwise yeah life is life no matter where you are.

Drive down 30 between Ames and Cedar Rapids: more than a few farms where they seem to have deemed it easier to build more outbuildings than get rid of anything. And maybe it is?

See a lot of Polk County cars in the campground at our area park on the weekends. I suppose all the locals are in Des Moines on the weekend.
