I agree. CY ST8T is the pot calling the kettle black on this one. He chastises others’ post for being disrespectful and calls them out on it only to turn around and exhibit the same. Hey Matt if you are going to position yourself as the “moral conscienceâ€￾ with regards to how others post on this board you may want to practice what you preach. :rolleyes5cz:

Oh, and I am still waiting for you to point out all those MAC bashing post. :wink0st:

Yes, because I stuck up for Mac in one post I have no right to ever have fun at the expense of anyone in the sports world. Total preaching huh? Meanwhile you Goshow is on every Mac thread like hair gel on Alford with all of your shots. I don't need to waste my time documenting all the posts that you have been on and others have in ripping Mac. Oh wait, sorry there I go again ripping a guy like Alford as I have supposedly been deemed a moral conscience and shouldn't have been negative at all. My bad!

I did meet Mac on several occasions and he just was a genuine person that I admired. Does that make me an "idiot"? Fine, so be it!

No, I don't think you've qualified for idiocy here. Fool yes, one easily duped yes, idiot no.

Easily duped how? I have not defended his coaching saying he is the ultimate or a coaching icon. I only have defended the fact that he was honorable and meant something to some people at the university. I also said that I agreed with the change and fully support Chizik. So please explain how I was duped.

You should change your screen name to Mr. Obvious. :yes4lo:

I don't normally single people out, but nearly everything you type puts me on edge. You are the foremost defender of McCarney, crying foul and going so far as to call his detractors "idiots"; yet here you are taking pot shots at VandeVelde, about whom you probably don't know much.

I don't know Bruce VandeVelde, but I do know that the job he had did not allow him the sweeping power presently enjoyed by Jamie Pollard. VandeVelde was a year-to-year contract guy and many knowledgeable people recognize that he was the administration's short-term hatchet man. We'll never know if he had a vision for the athletic department, but we do know that he didn't have the power to accomplish anything. Even so, somehow you opine he's fit for nothing better than working at McDonalds.

In summary, if you're going to put yourself out there as the "defender of the unfairly treated", it's likely that BVD got shafted by ISU and ISU fans much moreso than Danny Mac. He certainly doesn't deserve your derision....

Actually Bruce put himself in the powerless position. He was a contract employee, the president of the university decided rather than renew his contract to make him year to year. Pres. G saw he was not getting the job done but did not want to buy him out either. Leaving BVD in limbo was the strategy to get him out as quick and free as possible. The University did end up paying him for a while after he left but not as long as if he was fired at the time of the non-renewal.

Bruce is still living in Ames by the way, I saw him at church Sunday.

He may not have done the job we all would have liked, but he is a Cyclone. He did graduate from ISU, so we should give him a break. McCarney on the other hand is a Hawk!!!! Just kidding.

Regardless if Bruce was given the backing and resources that Jamie has, he never won over the ISU fans like Jamie has and that is a big step in doing anything as the AD I think. Bruce had some pretty controversial times during his tenure. Coming in and cutting baseball did not get him off to a stellar start then the whole way he handled the Larry situation was the nail in the coffin I think. He could have done something long before that article and pictures came out and done a lot of damage control before it ever got out of hand but he let the public make a mockery out of the whole deal and gave ISU a black eye. Then he couldn't get any respectable coach to take the job and hired Morgan after he had already told him he was out of the running.

Many poorly handled situations plus he couldn't even do presentations at halftime like Jamie does and sent an associate athletic director or VP of marketing or something out in his place because he knew the fans would boo him. He lost the fan's support very early which is not a good thing. Pollard is hands on and can relate to the fans, heck a friend of mine snagged a picture with him while tailgating at OU.

Just to show how unapproachable Bruce was, one of my friends was at a soccer game unaware that Bruce's wife and kids were sitting about 4 rows in front of them. They were talking about someone they knew and my friend happen to say something like "yeah I can't stand that guy." Well Bruce joins his family a few minutes later and his wife points up to my friend and Bruce calls him down out of the stands and begins giving him a heated lecture on how he didn't appreciate my friend badmouthing him in front of his family. My friend then got into it with him how his wife had no clue who they were talking about and if it wasn't for Bruce walking on eggshells around ISU fans because they didn't like him their conversation wouldn't have even mattered. Bruce trying to act surprised that someone thought he was unpopular asks my friend what made him think that so he brought up the baseball thing, the Larry incident, etc. before Bruce finally dropped it and went back to his family.

Thanks for the clarification, but I don't think I said anything contradictory to this. I've got a couple of big donor business acquaintences who like to talk sports, and their take was that BVD was always a transition AD put in place to utilize his accounting skills in balancing the athletic budget. Once BVD accomplished that task and some other dirty work, Pres. G was free to go "get his own man". I doubt that he chose to be "powerless" to elicit change; why would he? I don't know and I really don't care; I just don't like to see a man derided for incompetancy by people who don't know "the inside story".
