New PA Announcer

What ever happened to the 2 guys on the sidelines in Clyde Williams in the early 70's. Pregame, they would get the students fired up with the huge speakers and rock music. If I recall, T. O, got the Big 8 to put in rules to ban loudspeakers on the sidelines. Favorites were Rare Earth.

I must have missed the part where he compared himself to Pete Taylor. Mentioning that Pete also graduated from Iowa is not a comparison. It's a plea for the ******* subset of our fan base to give him a chance before writing him off and telling him to **** himself.

So if I would have used the word example instead of comparison you and I would be saying the exact same thing?

Cool post.

Thanks. I always appreciate positive reviews. I don't think we're saying the same thing, regardless of which noun you use. I think we should give the hire a chance, as it sounds like he's ready to commit to being a cyclone regardless of his alma mater. You're saying he should go **** himself because he dared mention that Pete Taylor also graduated from Iowa. Uncool posts.

He should spare us the Pete Taylor comparisons for now. Pete was an established broadcaster when he started calling Cyclone games, not the voice of the Urbandale Jayhawks.
He does have big shoes to fill, replacing both Gary and Karl. Not sure he was in any way trying to compare himself to Pete who was a beloved play-by-play guy. And nobody is replacing John or Eric (John W. has done unbelievably there really).

""Replacing legendary figures like Gary Wade, who was the energetic PA voice for Cyclone hoops for 42 years, and Karl Schloerke, who amped up Cyclone fans for 20 seasons at Jack Trice Stadium, is something Hammen knows will be difficult.

“I have big shoes to fill, no question about it,” Hammen said. “I will have a different style, but it will be an exciting call. Everybody has their own individual ways of doing things so it’s something that I think Iowa State fans will appreciate and enjoy. I know that they’re used to Gary and Karl for all of those years but all I would ask is they give me a fair shot and I know that they will because they’re knowledgeable.”" Hammen Excited For New Opportunity As Public Address Announcer | Cyclone Sidebar (wordpress.com)

What I think might make it a little easier is that we have a chance at greatness in football, and basketball has a new look also. Should be a great and interesting year all around.

Here is my final take on this. ISU compensates the PA announcer with 2 season tickets (probably a parking pass too). We should be grateful anybody wants to work really hard during a game for such little compensation. It's also okay to realize that the new PA announcer will fall in love with the Clones because "who wouldn't?"

How about we give this guy a chance before hating him just because he graduated from Iowa

The fact that he graduated from Iowa is okay with me. Most Iowa graduates are fine people.

It's the random fans you have to worry about. You know the guy who's a huge fan but never even been to Iowa City.

Funny thing is, that ******* subset sees the corresponding ******* subset among Hawk fans, and decides they’re all like that. It’s a never ending cycle.

I think that Joe will be okay. IIRC, he was in my sister’s class at MHS.

Would be an interesting poll, but I would say tavernhoks comprise about 40% of their fanbase vs 'random'.
Define “tavernhoks”. I grew up in SE Iowa, and know loads of folks who didn’t attend UI but are Hawkeye fans (once including my mother)…and don’t fit the stereotype.

Yes, I’m challenging commonly held stereotypes. Weird, huh?

My definition (I'm sure there are others) is--- a tavernhok has never been to a game in Iowa City.

What's your %?

I used to lump them all together. I have matured. Most hok grads don't want anything to do with the 40% of douche nozzles that make them look petty. We have our own issues but I would say it is ~15% now.

I thought he was good. I’m having a hard time picturing his voice in Hilton, but I’m sure he will be good there too.
