Campbell turned down $68.5m NFL contract this off season

Having lived in the Detroit metro (Macomb County) for a decade now, here's the problem with people's assumptions of Detroit - they assume that "Detroit" is all there is here. And as nice as downtown Detroit actually is (and I have absolutely no problems taking my family down there with any kind of fear that we're risking out lives), no coach is living there - they're likely living in Oakland County, which is one of the wealthiest counties in America, and that's including Pontiac, which for all intents and purposes is Detroit Junior. And if anyone just had to have the "Ames Experience", Ann Arbor is less than an hour away.
Downtown Detroit is gorgeous. Doesn’t get nearly the recognition it deserves.

When you make millions a year, is there really a difference of quality of life between $4 million and $8.5 million per year? That is insane money that most coaches would jump at but if you already love what you do where you are at and have the quality of life you want/need, what is the point going to the Lions when they will just fire you before the end of your contract? Not to mention you are on track to have your statue outside of JTS someday.

Not gonna lie -- there have been a couple jobs I've not accepted due similar reasons. Granted you have to remove a couple zeros on the dollar figures, but you get what I mean.

Actually multigenerational wealth like that can start to cause more problems than it is worth when you start getting generations removed from where it was earned.

I know what you're saying, but most of us in the Midwest haven't had much exposure to how trust fund kids on the east coast have lived for generations.

Guys this isn't that big of a deal. It's a smart move by him simply because that's a s**t job. Yeah, double the money in a year, but you have to live in Detroit or surrounding area and likely loses his job in 2-3 years.

Except he isn't losing his job in 2-3 years. Dude doesn't know how to fail and would have the Lions primed for success in a year or two. And given the $hit show in Green Bay, the Minnesota mystery show, and whatever Chicago is, that division is ripe for someone to take over. That says it all about his decision to stay at ISU.

If Dodd is correct, it's means CMC is betting on himself, and that a destination he may really want will be there down the road.
Or, he feels he's at his destination.

I always wondered why Tom Osborne and Bill Schneider stayed put. they were both offered huge amounts of money to coach in the NFL. The politics, media and fans can really make life difficult for these coaches. why not stay put and retire on your terms and not have all the headaches of the Prima Donnas at that level.

I would assume yes honestly. That's money that can help out a lot of people and set up your families for life. He really loves it here though
Yup it’s a huge difference and generational wealth but long term here and cost of living in Iowa he’s in great shape regardless especially as ISU continues to pay him more

CMC... What a guy.

It's going to feel damn good cheering them out of the tunnel on 9/4 in a sold out JTS.

Turning down a 68.5 million dollar NFL contract is quite literally the definition of a big deal
