Best Athletic Shoe

I've been in the market for a new pair of running shoes so I stopped by here last night and got hooked up. If price is an issue, they've got past year products that you can get for under $100.

How was your experience? I may go after work today. Don't really care about price as long as they are not over $150. Seems like there are a lot of options around $100-$130.. Which is meaningless when amortized over the amount of usage they will get. Plus I won't run 100's of miles in them so wear shouldn't be an issue

It's a good place. They've got a lot of workers that know what they're doing. I've never been to a proper place to buy running shoes before so they looked how I walked and where I place pressure on my feet to determine the right kind of shoe and then gave me multiple brands to try on. They've got a little running/walking area to test them out too. After I determined what brand I wanted then they gave me multiple options for colors and past year models as well.

I've had problems with my tendons inflaming when I run, so I'm trying different shoes at the moment.
I picked up a pair of ON Cloud-X to try out. So far so good.

You might not need it, but when I started to buy Wide shoes it was a game changer. I used to always blow the side of the toe box before getting the wide shoes. I currently wear Brooks Beast and they are fantastic. and yes go to fitness sports,... they are fantastic!

Like I said, I haven't ran in years but my experience with Fitness Sports has been amazing. Probably the best business I've dealt with in Central Iowa. When I was running, I would go in about once every 9 months(700 miles) or so and pick up a new pair of shoes. As soon as I walked in the door, the same sales guy would come up to me and say something like "We have a sale on the 990's in green". They have great sales people that remember their customers and sponsor a lot of local races.

Schuling Hitch, Hummels Nissan (Bart), and Fitness Sports are 3 local businesses that I can't recommend enough.

My son wears Brooks that we buy from Fitness Sports and the tread started coming off one of the shoes because he was playing basketball in them. Stopped into Fitness Sports to show them and the owner replaced them with no questions asked.

I went there every summer in HS when I was running cross country. They gave you a discount if you were an XC runner.

They've had my repeat business every since I got back to the metro.

I don't really check their website much anymore, but they have a pretty comprehensive calendar of every 5K/race over the summer.

A dude that runs ultras is going to need different shoes than someone that races 5ks or someone that runs 20 mi/week. Go to a good running/outdoor store and get some recommendations then try them out. If they don't have an, at least 30 day, return period buy them somewhere else. roadrunnersports.com is my goto.

Yeah I didn’t get the same style Hokas that he has with the max cushion because I don’t run anywhere near as much as he does. Definitely agree that if you’re new to running or have foot problems that consulting a pro would be your best option.

Do white New Balance even count if they aren't grass-stained from push mowing the lawn, though?

Nope. I was going to pick some up last summer just for mowing, but I didn't realize they were so expensive - I was thinking like $30-40. Can't bring myself to spend double that just for mowing, I just use old shoes that are past their prime.

Are there actually people who buy new shoes just to mow in? It’s always been the last stop in my shoe rotation.

I’ve worn Solomon’s for the last 8 years...most comfortable shoe I’ve ever had.

Solomon's ultra light trail runner tread is amazing. It seriously feels like you have the feet of a clawed animal. Some of their footwear is a little narrow for me, my wife just got some solimon waterproof winter boots on clearance.

I am in the same category as you but run a bit more. As a guy who suffers from reoccurring planters, I switched many different shoes but had good experiences with Adidas ultraboost and ASICS Nimbus but hear great things about Brooks and Hoka. The comfort in the forefoot and sole in general are big positives for my feet.
Edit: also tried Nike Pegasus which was good but didn’t fit my feet the way I prefer.
