Paul Johnson did a pretty damn good job of it. Just saying. Not saying KU will be good but it can be done.
Paul Johnson was sitting in Atlanta, in the heart of Georgia, surrounded by all the talent of the Southeast at a traditional football school.
What on that list does KU have in common?
Even so, Johnson had a grand total of five decent seasons in eleven at the school—two of those his first two, with “someone else’s players”.
Plus, the very first thing his successor did was loudly scrap that offense to make it easier to recruit.
I just don't understand why anyone would take that job, honestly.
I seem to recall that he’s 55. Must not have been getting any other P5 calls, this is his retirement package.
He was .500 or better in 10 of 11 seasons in conference play. He was good. Never said it would work at KU but why not give it a shot. But trying to say he wasnt successful is not accurate.
I'm not sure you need high level athletes. You need the right kind of athletes, at least on offense. Big and strong is something the Midwest produces pretty well. They're never going to contend for conference championships running Triple O, but they could win more than they are now and get bowl eligible which is probably their goal. If they decide to run that offense that is.
At KU I would define success at becoming bowl eligible each year. I think they can get there running the triple option.
I don't believe triple option will work in the XII. Too many good athletes on defense. We shall see.
The diffculty running the triple option is that today's players are fast enough to defeat it. Back when the bugeaters ran it, defensive players couldn't cover as much ground as they can today. Why do you think no one has ever attempted it in the NFL? Because it would never work against defensive players of that caliber. KU would run into the same problem in the Big12.
I actually figured Les was going to be okay at Kansas. I'm not sure this guy will be any better. I feel like he Triple Option is out of date and won't work in today's game.
I don't understand why people say it can't happen at Kansas. I mean, they were in the Orange Bowl not THAT long ago. They just have to be willing to put the investment into it, which doesn't seem like they are.

If this means Monken is going to fail miserably I'm all for it. My sense is he won't...I hope I'm wrong.
Has someone let Jeff Monken know he's taking the KU job? Might be time to pull an Altman......
That could actually work to their detriment in my opinion. Be too confident and squeeze the box and you will get gashed hard when they break second level on multiple drives. Yes the lateral speed is there to compensate for the overall movement the offense is facilitating but that cut back is the same principle that we use in zone blocking today so I find it amusing people think it would never work.
That's not true Baltimore was absolutely destroying people the last 2 years with option. RPO is option it's just a different style.

The thing to remember about Beaty was that he was a position coach prior to becoming the head coach at KU. He wasn't even a coordinator when he was hired. Up to that point, he was an offensive coordinator for 1 year at Rice in 2010, and co-offensive coordinator at KU in 2011.
When they hired him at the time, I laughed because they couldn't even find a coordinator to take the position, they had to go to a position coach.
I thought Beaty was doing ok, that whole thing was such a mess.
