Manchester to Milan is 1/3rd of the distance than San Francisco to New York...
Cool. How long does it take you to go through customs? How are the airports in Europe? How many fans are going to go crazy for that rivalry the way they do for Derbies against cross town clubs?

About 2 hours. Airports are fine?

Teams that are proposed to be in this Super League include:

CROSS TOWN RIVALS Manchester City and Manchester United
CROSS TOWN RIVALS Chelsea and Arsenal
CROSS TOWN RIVALS Atletico and Real Madrid
CROSS TOWN RIVALS AC and Inter Milan

Not of this World
That was talked about yesterday and it will 100% happen.

So they are going to forgo millions of Euros of advertising dollars and sponsorship money they will have to pay back for not having the semi's and the finals and will hand the trophy to PSG? Consider me skeptical.

Hey, I'm sure that the extra interest in the new Europa League final of Roma/Villarreal should cover those loses. :jimlad:

I just wish there was a more reasonable approach to this situation than trying to nuke most of the domestic leagues. Obviously this could all be some form of negotiating ploy, but surely an exclusive single elimination tournament similar to the FA Cup could help generate additional revenue for some of the big money clubs. I just have a hard time imagining most supports stick with their clubs if they ultimately pull the trigger on this.

Uhh... travel within Europe is very easy. It's probably even easier if your a professional soccer organization with private jets.

Ah shoot, I didn't note that Tottenham was a part of the cross town rivalry with Arsenal as well.

So, truly, 9 of the 12 teams already signed on are cross town rivals.

Barcelona is really just rivals with Real Madrid, so they don't lose their rivalry.

Juventus I guess is cross town rivals with Torino?

And Liverpool loses their cross town rivalry with Everton.

Regardless, the rivalries we usually see will continue to be the rivalries we see.

Its not about the teams. Its the fans. If you think the local interest in these matches will be the same I think thats a unique perspective.

This is driven by the Real Madrid organization. And they are broke by all financial standards. This is a hail mary to not default for them.

I struggle with this whole thing. I get the outrage but I can't help but think a few things... 1. If you think UEFA/FIFA and the CL are the "good guys" here, you've got your head in the sand, 2. People are overestimating the value of local fans (see Manchester City), 3. This was always going to happen... after the formation of the PL and CL, this was the inevitable next step, and 4. American fans who are also avid MLB/NFL/NBA fans being pissed about this crack me up.

The whole Super League this is lame and it destroys local support and I don't like it, but I'm not going to get bent out of shape about it because I don't believe many clubs have been "local" in a long time. Look at Man City... money built what is now one of the most valuable entities in sports. They can't sell out their stadium, but that doesn't matter. Tickets aren't where the money is, it's global sponsorships, merchandise, branding, TV deals, etc.

UEFA/FIFA are a ******* joke and trying to play "hero". Banning players and clubs because they are losing their cash cows. Same goes for the leagues if they kick out the teams. You think there is anywhere near the money in the PL without the top 6? Hell no. Outside of the UK you're just not going to get people tuning in to watch glorified Championship. That's also why I don't think the PL does anything about it. The financials collapse without the support of the top teams. The ESL teams are betting that they can survive longer financially on their own than the domestic leagues if they try and force their hands and they are right. They'll win out and then fill the void, as they'll be the option.

You have to just realize these teams are essentially trying to make the "NBA" of european soccer. Big money, no relegation threat, etc. It's pure and simple greed. I hate it because it kills the last shreds of belief that it's "for the fans" but there is no time to be naive about it.

Germany is the only real league with a leg to stand on because of the required fan ownership stakes. Props to Bayern and Dortmund there. Leipzig is hilarious in this however because they've scammed their way towards the top of Germany and have just broken into the CL. Now they wouldn't have a seat at the table in a Super League and their entire model falls apart.

I hope everyone takes the time to understand the history of both the top flight of English soccer and European soccer. Major changes occurred in the early 90s to both to propel the Premier League into existence (with Everton as a major driver!) and to change the Champions League to include non-Champions and include a group stage so that the biggest clubs could remain in the competition longer.

Of course, but the creation of the PL didn’t create a closed shop where nobody ever got relegated down to the Championship and the expansion of the CL still required teams to earn their spot in the competition by performance in their domestic leagues.

Can you imagine how boring a Premier League season is going to be when the top half of the table has nothing on the line?

You don't think there will still be a Champions' League?
