Iowa State is where Arizona guys go to WIN!Interesting name... Addison’s from Arizona considering his interest list it may be hard to pull him from the South West. Still ISU is being included so must be a legit option.
Curious if he could commit now and be eligible for this spring? assuming a waiver being approved for most every player.

It was some kid in western Iowa - Sioux City maybe? I think it was McDermott and the kid never developed and maybe got into some kind of legal trouble. That is about all I can remember.
I'm guessing he actively recruited Grill even after he signed at ISU. I'm not a big fan of Grill to begin with, but the whole flip flopping he's doing gives me an additional reason to not really care for him. He wasn't loyal the first time around, bailed when things got tough, but now wants to come back because he likes the new coach. Hard pass on him, kind of sucks I'll have to cheer for him next year. The thing that I don’t like about this is that it flies in the face of what TJ said at his press conference. He said he wanted guys that want to be at Iowa State. With Caleb, if he wanted to be at Iowa State, he would STILL be at Iowa State. He wasn’t forced out, he chose to leave.
I’ll probably catch some flack for this, but a few things that TJ has done already have me scratching my head. I am not a TJ hater. I’m rooting for the guy, but I still don’t have a good feel for how genuine he is.
Thank you for posting this. Was starting to worry that I was the last sane person left in the men's bball forum. This board has a weird boner for Caleb Grill. He was an abysmal producer for arguably the worst or second-worst team in program history. He improved from below average to average at UNLV with much higher usage in a lesser conference. Just because “durrrrrrrrrr muh brain ruhmumbers that name so let’s get him I remember him so he is good at the sportsball durrrrrrrrr” we want him back?
Is there such dissonance caused by one’s history with- /passion for Iowa State that our fan base tards out to the fact that there will be much better options in this ridiculous transfer market? He’s a player that contributed to Prohm losing his job. You don’t bring that back, though I have no doubt Otz will. But you shouldn’t settle for average players. He’s no Scott Christopherson shooting the ball and there are a lot of “gym rats” on the market.
Well yeah, this is obvious. They also aren't going to win many more games than they have been signing guys that were marginal players for a bad team in the mountain west.An 0-18 team is not going to be able to fill up on six 15ppg transfers. Be realistic man.
He could be the next max abmas. Or the next sherron dorsey walker.Nunn isn’t that good.
You are hitting the nail on the head here. Someone asserted we were already improving in the 3 pt shooting dept. by bringing in Grill and Kunc. Well grill will be coming in to replace the minutes of Harris, Bolton, or JC-L. Guys who shot 31, 31, and 39% against tougher opponents. I'm not seeing the immediate need being fulfilled by Grill.I guess I don't really understand why people think Grill can shoot. On the 19-20 ISU team, he wasn't even in the top half of the team in 3P% among those who had an attempt. He was 13 of 15 in FG Percentage (LAST among Scholarship players). He also shot 2nd to worse on FTs among those who had an attempt - 57%. As I season ticket holder, I remember his biggest contributions being standing in the corner and missing defensive assignments. I also remember his hustle, but I also recognize that hustle does not a player make - I got the "Charlie Hustle" award on my HS team before I realized that wrestling was actually a much better fit for me.
I feel like the counter is that people will point to his growth. I think it is also fair to ask how much of that can be attributed to moving to an easier conference. Even then, the improvement was not great... Still under 40% FG%, Still under 65% FT, and a solid increase in 3P% - but even that was still 34%.
Finally, if we are going to point to growth as Grill being a take, I have 2 thoughts... When can we expect that growth to plateau? And why wouldn't we extend the same growth projections to guys in our program who are also in their first year? Johnson, Harris, Walker, Dubar, all had better first year campaigns than Grill did.
TL,DR - I don't get the hype.
He belongs in a conference like the Mountain West.I like his growth from freshman to sophomore year. One thing to remember he wasn't a specialized athlete in HS who just played basketball. He played 4 sports and was all-state in football & basketball plus won state in high jump. So it's only reasonable to expect his game to be raw.
Cyclone fans saw that when Caleb was a freshman. He looked lost at times and very mechanical. In the UNLV games I watched this season he looked more natural and wasn't shy about shooting. IMO Caleb could be a starter next year (especially if Bolton is gone), but regardless he would be a solid bench player getting 20-30mpg depending on ISU's depth.
Caleb would give ISU another offensive threat. He was a bit streaky, but he scored double digits in 11 UNLV games and scored 27 pts with 6 rebounds against Alabama this past season on 7-12 shooting from 3.
Fred's days of being a good coach are behind him. That's what happens when you leave good jobs for bad jobs.Freddie has 5 so far. Must be another reload year.
Aren't we all assuming Grill wants to follow TJ back to ISU (that and/or TJ wants Grill)? Where there is smoke there is likely fire. So my guess is those are good assumptions. But nobody has said anything either way right?I'm guessing he actively recruited Grill even after he signed at ISU. It's all but a done deal.Aren't we all assuming Grill wants to follow TJ back to ISU (that and/or TJ wants Grill)? Where there is smoke there is likely fire. So my guess is those are good assumptions. But nobody has said anything either way right?
