Was in DSM yesterday and noticed at least 5 panhandlers at intersections as you come off 235 exits.
The amount of panhandlers has increased exponentially since covid and was on the rise prior to covid.

I think this has as much to do with supply as demand. People in Iowa are nice and it’s easy money if you are willing to beg.

It's not as an attractive of a place as it was 10 years ago. It was one of the up and coming cities in America at one time. People are finding that places like Little Rock and Boise aren't as ass backwards as Iowa has become.

Never been to Boise, but lived in Little Rock for a year. Your comment makes me wonder if you have been there. LR has a long way to go to be in the same discussion as DSM

Plus, it’s too damn cold in Iowa to harbor a huge homeless population. Most of those cities with the most have both a moderate climate and ridiculously expensive housing.

And generally more social services available. Those cities\states, in effect, end up picking up some of the load for other cities\states that aren't doing as good of a job.

Sounds to me like it’s a nationwide problem.

So what’s the cause, and what’s the solution? A lot of complaining on here, but no solutions.

This is quite the reaction to seeing one homeless person.
This. I've lived in the DSM and surrounding metro and worked downtown for 15 years and have never seen a homeless person doing anything like that. There is the occasional homeless person, but if anyone thinks it's bad in DSM they need to travel more. Like a LOT more.

Just my two cents here. I'm in Kansas city and in this area it is not a homeless guy on the corner. It is a team effort. They work shifts. They move around. It is a well orchestrated machine. They make a killing. I don't want to overgeneralize but I see the same people all over the city. I also don't want to say that everyone on a corner asking for help is part of the team, but I do know for a fact that there are territories and shifts and a lot of the people on the corner are just "clocking in". Not totally sure how I feel about it. Does it really affect me? Not really. It does bother me though as I feel it is dishonest. Whatever. I don't really have a dog in the fight but I think word has got out that you can make a lot more money just standing around asking for it than contributing to society.

Yep. Same in CBus. Reddit has ran a full investigation on it. They stake out the cars that drop off the panhandlers and match up the cars with the territory.

Everything I have read says there are two classes of homeless people in the US. The first group tend to be homeless for less than 6 months. Many in this group have fallen on hard times, lost job, lost their home or whatever. They tend to be living out of their car if they have one or be part of the system until they get back on their feet.

The second group are the long term homeless, many of these people have mental or drug issues and a lot prefer to live on the street, as crazy as that seems.

You can help the first group, but the second is generally beyond hope without mental or drug treatment hospitals. Which are becoming fewer and fewer unless you can pay for it.
