My concern is on the ISU central campus...it looks rather shabby compared to the past. Oh and who else has relieved some pressure by the trees next to the horticultural building?

Seen the same thing happen in IC on football game day. Right in the front yard of my friends pllace.

These threads always turn into 'Hawks on my belly' guy stories.

Normally I would agree but San Fran gets cold and homeless population in Texas and some
Other warm states is nothing like LA and San Fran

San Francisco's record cold is in the 20s. Its not comparable to most of the rest of the country.

At an ISU game a few years ago in the Haunted Forest. We were playing catch on one of the Coldwater Fairways (this was before they put up the chain link fence). A college coed comes up and asks if I mind if she goes to the bathroom. I’m like, “you can do whatever you want to do as I don’t own the property.” She just drops her pants right in front of me and goes. Some drunk college guy pulls his phone out and starts taking pictures. I yelled at him to delete them or I was going to called a deputy friend of mine who was working the game. The gal hugged me and her friends came over and proceeded to go into a sand trap and relieve themselves! WTF!!

Well, did they at least rake the trap after they were done. As long as they followed gold etiquette I guess.

I get around
Was in DSM yesterday and noticed at least 5 panhandlers at intersections as you come off 235 exits.
The panhandlers are all over the metro area, West Des Moines, Altoona, etc. One guy I've seen just about every time that I go through a particular intersection for at least the last two years. He should be ready to retire to a mansion in the Caribbean by now.

Anybody having to be homeless is too many, but I'd be surprised if DSM isn't under average for other cities of similar size. The past year has probably made matters worse, but again, that would likely impact other areas at an even higher rate based on local economy data.
There are homeless people everywhere in Billings, Montana. It's weird how some cities are just randomly worse. I think the Crow Indian Reservation contributes to some of it. It has to be among the worst places in America per capita.

Sometimes I wonder if they really need to be doing it and need the money or not. Like where is that persons BMW stashed.

Instead of complaining about the homeless, I always ask what the solution to it is?

Maybe the top 1% shouldn’t own as much as the bottom 90% in this country, and maybe we should take care of our population of people with mental challenges? Instead we’ve defunded mental hospitals and closed them.

Just my two cents here. I'm in Kansas city and in this area it is not a homeless guy on the corner. It is a team effort. They work shifts. They move around. It is a well orchestrated machine. They make a killing. I don't want to overgeneralize but I see the same people all over the city. I also don't want to say that everyone on a corner asking for help is part of the team, but I do know for a fact that there are territories and shifts and a lot of the people on the corner are just "clocking in". Not totally sure how I feel about it. Does it really affect me? Not really. It does bother me though as I feel it is dishonest. Whatever. I don't really have a dog in the fight but I think word has got out that you can make a lot more money just standing around asking for it than contributing to society.

Plus, it’s too damn cold in Iowa to harbor a huge homeless population. Most of those cities with the most have both a moderate climate and ridiculously expensive housing.

I’m in the metro too, and the first time I noticed this was a decade or more ago. I gave a guy a few bucks, then I noticed he had well trimmed facial hair and was wearing a nicer shirt than me.

I drive up Euclid from MLK to Delaware everyday for work. Rarely do I not see someone who appears to be disheveled and probably homeless. But I wouldn’t say it has gotten exponentially worse in the last year.

I think what you saw was an extreme outlier.
