Report: T.J. Otzelberger headed for Iowa State

Yep. Good to network and know people, sure, but an above-board process should be about qualifications AND personal fit/reputation. We know that isn’t how the world works (not about what you know but who you know) but it’s definitely corrupt to hire someone for a multi-million dollar position with almost no vetting process.

Well at least someone gets it. There's nothing wrong with considering, interviewing, etc your friends for a job. But at the end of the day, not giving other candidates a fair chance at the same job, who are not your friends, is an unfair practice. A lot of the world, even the US, doesn't work this way of course. I'm not going to claim I'm a saint - I've done this previously in my career but there's been personal experiences that have made me shy away from this as a practice.

I hope TJ succeeds beyond our wildest dreams, I’ll be cheering him on - but it doesn’t help him in any way to have the aura of a corrupt process for hiring him hanging over his head before he even starts. He has to succeed or JP is going to really regret this process.

I was talking to my Dad about this last night. He's a basketball fan, but not a stupid message board poster, so he really didn't know who TJ was. I obviously was not a fan, so I'm not sure I got my dad's honest reaction.

But....he did say that you would hope for just appearance sake that Jamie would wait a week to hire TJ and it might benefit TJ to wait.

Twitter is still relatively quiet with this news, beyond the Vegas article.

So naturally KXNO is running with it.

But you are assuming this search didn't start until Prohm was let go. It was pretty obvious a change was needed back in January. I'd expect that Pollard was conducting the search over the past few months. He's really good at keeping that under the radar.

But he can't really admit that. AT the very least, he can't say he talked to an existing head coach before today. So the appearance is going to be he hired TJ in 48 hours or whenever it goes official.

The head coaching resume obviously isn’t going to blow anyone away and I get the hesitation with that. But it’s also easy to see the positives in this hire that are significantly better then head coach’s who check the box with x and o’s and have longer head coaching success via win loss. Yea there is a chance it blows up in 5 years but think this is also the quickest solution to a rebuild compared to other realistic options while uniting the program.

I don’t see an issue but I don’t live in a world where “process” trumps everything else. I live in a world where pragmatism and risk taking are rewarded. You should try it. It’s fun
Yes, we know you’re okay with ignorance.

Are you also in the world were risk taking is punished if it doesn’t work. Is that the case here?

This is a neat spin on the "I was talking to my wife" stories we always get on here.

All I can say is that I was pretty certain Prohm wasn’t the right man for the job about half way through year one, but I at least gave the man time to do his thing. Hell, I didn’t miss a home game his first two years. Those in here talking in negative absolutes are jumping the gun. People told me I’m not a real fan for not supporting Prohm last year and early this year because they couldn’t see what was obvious for a while, but at least I gave the guy a shot.

TJ was part of the best run we’ve had as a program, wife was a cyclone great, and as far as I’m concerned we owe him a shot before making judgements.

Just because Rhoads wanted to be here and failed doesn’t mean all coaching candidates in that same vein are doomed from the start.

Well judgment over. Great hire!!
