In Memoriam: Ames Business/Restaurants

It's probably been mentioned as couple times already in this thread, but Cafe Shi is the biggest restaurant loss in Ames of the last 20 years. Originally in campustown, but moved to Northern Lights. They had "international" cuisine, with an ever changing menu which included asian food, italian, Caribbean, American, Latin, and whatever the chefs felt like making that day. It was the kind of place to take your parents when they visited, or friends from out of town. I believe they closed due to the owner's poor health. Definitely a shame, because it was one of the best places in town.

There was a group of "older" grad students and "younger" faculty/staff from my department that generally gathered there. The actual individuals rotated but there were some of us there every week.

I worked at O'Malleys as a cook and it the most fun i've ever had at a job. Sometimes at the end of the night the managers would say "everyone stop what you're doing!". Then they're bring 2 pitchers of beer into the kitchen and hand everyone a straw, split us into 2 groups and have a pitcher race. There were lots of other examples like that.

We used to party there quite a bit and the wait staff was very easy on my eyes around 99-01.

OMG yes. They were at Davincis IIRC.

They had the best fire roasted salsa. Mrs. GT was able to get pretty close on their fajita marinade / recipe. Always a favorite!
 
Cocost chinese right on Welch. Everything was 5.00 even when I was in college. The same guy that took the orders was there no matter what time of day. I can still hear the way he'd say "Cuuuurrrry chicken" like Steph just drained a three.

Eateries:
DaVinci's Pizza Campustown. 292-3003. I remember the phone number 30 years later. Tell you somethin'?
Thumb's Up. Yep - used to be a restaurant. Pasta on Sundays. Loved it.

Drinkeries:
That Place. I still want a basket of peanuts and a cold pitcher.
Tradewinds. Potlucks, game watches, loud music, whatever. Always a good time.

Combined:
Dugan's Deli West Street. Awesome food, drinks, and bands.
O'Malley McGees South Duff. Great food, service, & drinks.
