TJ knows what it takes to win at Iowa State. His teams would also have an identity, which has honestly been Prohms biggest downfall. TJ is a solid offensive mind and he would make Cyclones hoops exciting to watch.

What makes you say that? His system worked in the Summit League just like Prohm's system worked in the OVC. He doesn't seem to have it in the Mountain West. Not having a guy like George Niang or Mike Daum will do that to your offense.

It will be interesting to see how much good will he gets from fans. He will get a lot of good will from the fans with power and influence. But I’m not sure if he will from average fans.

I’m obviously no fan of his with how 2015 was handled and that isn’t his fault. But I’ll get on board when he’s hired, I guess.

the casual fan knows who TJ is, and of course they also know his wife.

He’s going to get a long leash with the fans.

What makes you think TJ would be a good hire? I have seen nothing from him that makes me think he would be any better than Prohm. UNLV is looking worse year 1 to year 2. Very Prohm-esque.
The thing with TJ is while there is pause from this year he would have been a great candidate every year since Prohm was hired.

His resume is infinitely better than what Prohms was. He has extensive P5 experience as an assistant. His recruiting is our normal recruiting grounds. He took SDSU to the NCAA tournament 2/3 years and the third year the NIT. Last year he seemed to really get UNLV going at the end of the year. This year they’ve struggled but they’ve had Covid issues and I think have struggled gelling. Even then UNLV has a history of not being able to put it together so the issue could be more school related.

Before this year I think you should have taken TJ right away. This year TJ is still my favorite but you should do a full search.

True. But I’m somewhat surprised that there are enough people on here that don’t want him.

But we’ll be told how great he is just like we were in 2015 when he was framed as the only possible choice.

I don't think there's been enough time to tell whether DeVries or TJ will be the right hire. I honestly think both coaches are at points in their careers where they need 2-3 more years before determining they're great coaches or not and neither may get that amount of time.

Would he still be your favorite if he didn’t previously coach at Iowa State? Being a good recruiter means nothing if you can’t consistently coach your players up. I’d rather see Pollard hire a great X’s and O’s guy.

If you are just going for "better than Prohm" sure TJ would probably fit the bill, the bar isn't high obviously. But if you want to go for an actual good hire, not a chance TJ is the guy right now.

I'm not ruling him out. He can recruit to Ames very well, and he's probably solid as a bench guy.
I don't want to see the actual search, should it actually happen, just be 2 guys.

ISU has had the same struggles this season with protocols. You cannot give T.J. rope and not Prohm. Doesn't mean we win this year or that CSP is great, but what is good for the goose.......well. So please take that off the table for why T.J. is struggling unless you want to give Steve this season as well.

TJ does not have an "infinitely better" resume. That is a joke.

When Prohm was hired he had never lost more than 11 games in a season and had won more than 30 games in a season once. He won the regular season league title 4 times out of 4 chances and made the NCAA tourney once and his team got shafted another year. He had both of his point guards drafted from a school that hadn't had a player picked in the draft since 1992. Prohm has recruited very well to ISU, you can't really make that argument.

You could maybe say TJ did just as well at South Dakota St, but that would be a major stretch. He certainly does not have a better resume.

I like chris Mooney at Richmond.

of course Nate Oates would be a grand slam hire. But that’s not going to happen.

I like Mooney also. Another coach we really have to look at even though he burned bridges is Medvid at CSU. Guy can coach and has a awesome staff. Plus they could probably open up recruiting roads to the Twin Cities.

Casting a wider net here beyond the mid-majors like TJ, Smith, and Devries, why not look at someone like Travis Ford?

Ford has proven success at both mid-major and power 5 levels (at multiple stops), solid Midwest recruiting ties (and from what I recall some decent juco ties too), and a coaching pedigree of having tough guard play.

He'd be on the upper end of initial asking price, but he's not at the tail-end of his career like a Beilein or Matta and he could welcome another go at the Big 12.

If Steve had shown promise every other year he would be getting a pass on this year. He hasn’t so the little down tick hurts him more because his base was lower. Say Prohm had a 40% approval coming into the year and in a normal year this would drop him 20%. Due to Covid it only drops him to 30%. 30% is the cutoff to get fired. Say TJ started with a 70% approval and his year normal would drop say 10% and due to Covid it only drops to 65%. UNLV is having a better year this year and TJ has been better in past years.

Prohm had never coached a P5 school. Prohm also did not win the conference every year. He won it twice. He didn’t even qualify for the post season one year. He inherited one NBA player and got another. Give him credit for recruiting those two guys but if you have that talent you should dominate your conference.

I was having a conversation with someone about this the other day. What would it take to restore faith in him? Personally, it would have to be at least a 2 year sustained run with us being in the top half of the Big 12 and in the NCAA tournament. I'm not up for showing marginal improvement and pretending we can forget about 3 out of the last 4 years.
Moot point.

Keep being hung up on TJ. Mike Daum/Georges Niang aren’t coming to save him at UNLV. If he can’t win at a mid major, we shouldn’t want him here. He isn’t going to bring back Fred’s magic you desperately want. The sooner we move on from that idea the better.

We don't know if TJ is the right guy for the job, but it's a little unfair to say he "can't win at a mid-major" when last year was his first year at UNLV and this year is as messed up as it is..
