The great thing about Iowa fans is that they always talk about how great their school is because of the med and law schools when that makes up like 3-4% of their enrollment. Chicago suburbanite baristas with Liberal Arts degrees are probably their dominant demographic.

Kimber45's Way Too Early But 100% Accurate And Totally Not Homer Game Prediction:

TL;DR - Oregon by 10-14.

Iowa State will get the USC version of the Ducks rather than the Cal/Beaver version. Whatever ailed the defense, whether it was scheme or motivation, got sorted out. The kids will be up for a NY6 game against a much higher ranked opponent and the coaching staff is too good to bring out a flat/lethargic squad.

Shough will play a good to very good game. I attribute some declining decision making to Shough trying to make THE play rather than just taking what the defense gives and make A play. The Ducks also have enough talent at the skill positions that they can win with a quarterback who just distributes the ball around rather than has to put the entire offense on his back. There is also not a quarterback controversy at Oregon but Iowa State will definitely see several packages for Anthony Brown. Two of those packages will be successful and the third has a 50/50 chance for a turnover.

Had Oregon played a full season I think they are a 3, maybe 4, loss team and end up in the Holiday Bowl. The roster cycle this year just resulted in an abundance of youth and lack of reps. The team still oozes talent though and, like the USC game, having two weeks to game plan and practice will pay big dividends. Had Oregon had Spring camp and not had four starters opt out they are a 1 or 2 loss team ranked #10-15.

Although they haven't had a bunch of INTs this shortened season I think Cyclone fans will come away impressed with how good the Oregon DBs actually are. Watch for Nick Pickett. Dude is an absolute hammer. The roster also includes a stable of LBs who go like 6'+/250. If these guys can play gap sound and not bite on too many fakes, for as good as your backs are, I think they hold the Iowa State rushing game to 100 yards. Or 250 yards if they revert to old form.

On the Iowa State side I see a 8-3 team from a pretty mediocre conference where both Texas and Oklahoma came out of the gate with two losses ('grats on your wins tho). If this were a normal season I think the 8-3 Cyclones would slot in around #15-17. For what it's worth, I can also see Oregon at #25 but just as easily in the "others receiving votes" column.

I expect that Oregon will play a lot of man and come after Purdy. #5 will be in your backfield a lot. Four or five sacks will end otherwise promising drives. For Iowa State to win Purdy has to play like the All America he often resembles. In this game though Oregon's defense will make him look a lot more average.

Iowa State's run defense isn't #10 any more than Oregon's is #30. This is the most intriguing part of the matchup for me to watch. I haven't heard if Verdell will be available but Dye and Dollars are both plenty good enough to break long runs through your vaunted 3-3-5 cloud thingy. For awhile I thought Oregon would run for ~150 in the Fiesta. Then I settled on an oddly specific 126 yards. Now I think it will be either 126 yards or 226 yards.

Can Iowa State win? Yes. Will they, no. Final score will be something like 38-28 or 35-24 Oregon.

Iowa is like, 97% white. Not a ton of diversity in the state, especially if you get outside of the Des Moines and Waterloo areas. It’s improved a little over time, but my graduating high school class of 500 kids had I think 11 non-white kids?
I was hoping you would circle back around so I could check off the final box on my pregame checklist.

This is only relevant if one takes the view that ONLY Oklahoma and Texas can be really good teams in the Big Xii.

FWIW, OU started out the gate with 2 losses because they lost @ Iowa State (shame on ISU for winning that game!), and Texas started out the gate with 2 losses because they lost to Oklahoma (one of them had to lose).

Just pointing out the fallacy that just because OU and Texas lose a few early games does not make the conference mediocre. It might be mediocre, but that's not the reason. If OU beat ISU in Ames, and Texas beat ISU in Austin, we would have had an OU (8-1, 7-1) vs. Texas (7-2, 6-2) rematch in the Big Xii CCG, and OU probably makes the playoff (instead of ND) with another win over Texas. The fact that Iowa State beat them both and finished (8-2, 8-1) makes the conference tougher, not weaker.

Looking forward to the Fiesta Bowl.

Calm down, babe. There’s still plenty of other kitchen things you could be doing.
For whatever reason I don't post vote on the interwebs. I think its hard enough already to type with this wooden spoon.

But I love this site and every post on here should viewed as having an invisible "Like". Even posts by your mycrotchpants broad.

I just want to see a good clean hard fought football game on January 2nd.

Best of luck Cyclones and Go Ducks!

This game will be close. Oregon should be able to key Hall and we don’t have the qb play to beat the deep zones.

This is gold sweet lips

I am a transplant, so my point of view will be a little different. I was born in Alabama (Birmingham), Graduated from High School in Florida (Orlando) and graduated from Iowa State after 4 years in the Army. After 5 years in Iowa, I took my degree and moved around the country before moving back after 25 years. So, I am back in Des Moines for the past two seasons.

From a personal (day to day) point of view, not that big of a deal with Iowa fans, as most of us have both Cyclones and Hawkeyes in the family. For example, my wife is from a solid multi-generational Iowa State family, but her brother and a niece found their way to Iowa City. We still love 'em, but avoid them one day a year. lol. However, I admit, I am a transplant, I didn't have to grow up with them, and I lived in Ames for 5 years and I live in Des Moines now - so I've never had to daily deal with "Tavern Hoks" as an adult.

From a football point of view, it is salty, but not as bad as some in-state rivalries since they are in separate conferences. They didn't play for 40 years, which was before my time, but I do remember when they started playing again in the '70s (from afar as a kid in Birmingham). I actually saw Iowa State for the first time in the 1978 Hall of Fame Bowl @ Legion Field and became a fan at that time - even though I was living deep in Bear Bryant Alabama.

Iowa State was good in the 70s under Johnny Majors and Earl Bruce and went to 4 Bowl Games (1971 Sun, 1972 Liberty, 1977 Peach and 1978 HOF Classic @ Legion Field). In 1976, Iowa State was a win away (@ Okla. State in the final game) from winning the Big 8 and going to the Orange Bowl. I was not an ISU fan yet, but nobody in Alabama liked Nebraska or Oklahoma, so Iowa State winning the Big 8 would have been groovy. Turns out Colorado won the complicated tie-breaker that sent the Buffaloes to the Orange Bowl that year, and ISU slipped from 1st to 5th and No Bowl even with an 8-3 record!

So, they decided to play again, but Iowa would only do it if the first 4 games were in Iowa City. Iowa State agreed and were Upset by a terrible Iowa team in 1977 (the Hawkeye program was in the midst of a 19 consecutive non-winning season streak, and ISU played in the Peach Bowl that year). Didn't help that Iowa State had BEAT IOWA on the front of their jerseys. lol. They split the 4 game in IC (2-2).

After the 1978 season is when things really changed. Earle Bruce left Iowa State for Ohio State, and Bob Cummings was fired at Iowa. The Cyclones started their slide down, and the Hawkeyes rose from the ashes. However, it took the Cy-Hawk series a few years to catch on to the trend. Fry won his first game 30-14 in 1979, but he lost the next three to Iowa State including his 1981 B1G Champions (that were shut out by the Huskies in the Rose Bowl) losing 23-12 in Ames. That would be the last loss for Iowa in Ames until 1999 (I was there!). The Cyclones tacked on another win in 1982 @ Iowa for their third straight win, but that was it for a while. Hayden's Hawkeyes won 15 in a row until his last year as coach in 1998!

I officially joined the rivalry as a student in 1989. Ugly, ugly times for Iowa State football (1989 season was decent but the '90s sucked). Did not end until an amazing Upset @ Iowa in 1998 that ended the infernal streak at 15. Then, Iowa State won 5 in a row including giving the 2002 B1G Co-Champion Hawkeyes their only loss in the Regular Season in Iowa City. However, Iowa did get thumped by Pete Carroll's first great USC team in the Orange Bowl.

Iowa has won 5 in a row again including nut crunching losses in the last two games in Ames that ISU controlled throughout but Iowa found a way to win in 2017 (44-41 in OT) and 2019 (18-17). After the 2019 game, there was a brouhaha due to some interaction between the Iowa Band trying to march out of the stadium in formation blaring their fight song after a multi-delayed (weather X2) all-day affair that left everybody in a foul mood. I left after the 2nd weather delay and watched the end of the game at home.

The ironic part is that Iowa A.D. Gary Barta really made an ass out of himself over the whole thing (talking about cancelling the series because it was "Unsafe" @ Ames, etc.) , but he had to defend Iowa State being ranked so highly in the CFP Ranking this year. I must admit that he was 100% fair, defended Iowa State by their merits with absolutely no left handed compliments. Pissed off Iowa and Indiana (not a rival) fans though! lol Perhaps, the year off is good for the series, plus ISU gets back to back home games to make up a bit for the 4 straight at IC from 77-80?

Personally, I did not miss the game this year. I do like the fact they play and realize that it is a GREAT Day in the State of Iowa on Gameday. The entire state is ablaze with cardinal, gold and black and gold, and I love that part of it! However, I care more about what Iowa State does in the Big Xii than whether they win that game or not.

As for Farmageddon, it is Iowa State's oldest remaining rivalry and one of the longest continuously played FBS rivalries. When I was in school, K-State was still an easy win, but that was when Bill Snyder first arrived in Manhattan. The past 25 years have been hard, and Iowa State has way too many heart breaking losses to mention. Let's just say we fans enjoyed the 45-0 win this year in Ames, and ISU still leads the series!

Mizzou was a real rivalry lost when the Tigers moved to the SEC. Had a Telephone Trophy that is stuck in Columbia for now. This was a fun rivalry in both football and men's basketball. Most Iowa State fans (especially the cradle to grave ones) despise Mizzou, but I don't. That's a Native Iowa dislike that I do not share. Interestingly, my last two ISU-Mizzou games saw Troy Davis run for 378 yards in 1996 and Seneca Wallace set an all-purpose yardage record (493 total yards) in the 2002 game.

Nebraska was also a long played series that went away, but it was only a geographical rivalry amongst fans in Western Iowa-Nebraska. The Cornhuskers hold such a large series lead and would not deign to consider Iowa State (or any other team not named Oklahoma) a rival not even for a short period. ISU always had a way of annoying them though including the galactic Upset in 1992 (I was there!) that was Tommie Frazier's ONLY Big 8 Conference loss as a starter during a particular great Nebraska span (92-95). Plus, Iowa State won their last visit to Lincoln in 2009!

So, that is my opinion as a transplant. Fellow Cyclones, please feel free to add, correct, update and / or fill in any blanks I missed or stated incorrectly.

Let's Go State!
Beat the Ducks!
Thank you, that was an interesting read. I wasn’t sure about the level of hatred, or how/if being in different conferences makes a difference. Before this bowl was scheduled I knew very little about Iowa State football, outside of the story of Jack Trice, Troy Davis, and Seneca Wallace, and I’m pretty into college football and it’s trivia.

There are only two certainties in this world.

First, there is no crying in Valhalla.

Second, there no disputing a Kimber45 game prediction that is presented as "100% Accurate."

Perhaps you missed that part?

You’re on our turf, lady. We can dispute your claims all we want.

Merry Christmas to all of you. As a present I bring you Head Coach Mario Cristobal’s take on Iowa State:

"It’s the most physical team we’ve seen on tape — and I’m talking about since I've been here at Oregon."

For Cristobal this is the highest praise in football. He is basically asking for Iowa State’s band in marriage with that compliment. Over the last few years we’ve seen Michigan State, Auburn, Wisconsin, Utah, Stanford and some other teams that pride themselves on physicality.
You should have heard Campbell when we played Kansas
