Myles Mendeszoon Commits! (will play LB)

I dint mind low stars but when his other offers are terrible and a lot of recruits this cycle have terrible offers it makes me think of CPR recruits. Hope they are better than their offer list
I got a kick out of Ben Bruns story, when he said not to pay much attention to offers.

Apparently when he was playing, some of his teammates would talk about all the other great offers they had. He said they’d look at them and say, “You had all those great offers, and ended up here? And you’re still not playing”?

Apparently Ben isn’t impressed by “other offers”.

This is one recruit that I’m not sure about. Just because I can’t really project a position.

Nevermind. I was going to go into some rant about people who think their “concerns” mean a damn thing, but **** it. Don’t want to waste my time.

Linebacker seem really, really, really obvious. Him and Carston Marshall on the outside, Aidan Ralph in the middle.

I'll disagree with that. It's not that obvious. I know that's where they are projecting him to play, but CAN he play that position? Does he have the speed? Change of direction? Can he play in space? I mean, you put him at Hummel's spot, can he do it? Seems to me to be a lot closer to Will McDonald than Hummel or Spears or Rose. Without McDonald's elite pass rushing ability. It will be interesting to watch...maybe he's a future OLB, but his path doesn't seem as obvious to me as some of the other guys. Now, LEO in a 4-2-5, I'd buy in a heartbeat.

Don't mean to come off negative or condescending, but have you watched his highlight?

Exactly. His highlights told me he has the closing speed and change of direction. Maybe not quite as good as Carston Marshall, but that’s a very small thing, and just means that Marshall is the one playing Hummel’s spot you worried about.

I refuse to make the obvious comparison, just because it’s been as overdone as my grandma’s Thanksgiving turkey.

It appears we will consistently keep recruiting guys that are hybrid LB and DE types. Why? It gives our defense a ton of flexibility.

On rushing downs our ends can be more like Jaquan Bailey and Enyi / Zach Peterson on the outside.

For passing situations, more doses of Will McDonald. If this kid can gain 30 lb's I think he could be a Will McDonald type DE (notice I did not say Will McDonald, quality - he's special, but the style of DE that he is)

I like this recruit, I thought the same about Malik Verdon and I also really like our DE Jayden Gray out of Texas (more of your traditional DE like a Jaquan B). When it comes to getting defensive guys from Ohio, i fully trust this staff. I'm sure their hs coaching connections run deep and it wouldn't shock me at all if Campbell has recruited many players from this HS at his time in Toledo. Look I sometimes wish we got more kids from Iowa, but if we continue to get ballers from OH what do I care? If they can play, sign them up.

With the 3 - Cloud defense, this is the type of linebackers and DBs that we are going to recruit. Aggressive, athletic as heck and big bodied. All that can blitz. Basically interchangeable players. It makes it difficult to scheme against.

However, Myles is going to be a linebacker. Verdon is going to be a safety. End of story.

Is it?

We - including the coaching staff - thought that the end of the McDonald story would be at LB but that experiment didn't work. It is enough to say that they are slated to be a LB and a safety respectively. We don't know the end of the story.

Yeah, I don't think it's ever the end of the story when it comes to what position a recruit will play in college, unless you're talking OL, and even then, sometimes (rarely) they switch to DL. We've even seen this with QB recruits (Lanning, Easton Dean). Things are always changing, players come and players go, creating vacancies, areas of need and opportunities.

I did watch the video (SR film not on there yet obviously). What I saw was a physical player, good with his hands, good closing speed. But maybe a little bit of a long strider and change of direction is a question to me. Look, I'm not saying he isn't worthy of a scholarship...they can find a place on the field for a kid with his skill set, even if it is situational.

We have two pretty good OLBs this year. If Mendeszoon isn't playing WILL, he's playing SAM. And usually, that position is a smaller, faster guy that can cover. Rose can do it because he's a freak. Even then, most people would agree that he's probably playing out of position. Mendeszoon seems a lot like McDonald to me and we all know how his experiment at SAM went. If I'm projecting, I feel like they try to put 50 lbs on him and play him as a pass rushing DE. But I'll happily admit I was wrong when/if that happens.

Fair enough. We just happen to see him differently. And I’m willing to wait to see how things pan out as well. Forty-plus years of following recruiting, I know **** happens.
