Max Duggan cleared to play Saturday

I'm really not here to criticize CMC, but if you think the CPR Big 12 and the current Big 12 are even close to comparable....

K-State, Baylor, Tech, WVU all were Top 10 level teams at times that are now not very good.

CPR's best years record wise were when we still played in a garbage Big 12 North and 4 game non con... Yes, all of those teams were at times Top 10 level but lets not pretend there was a ton of overlap. CMC beat more ranked teams in two season than Paul did in his entire stretch at Iowa State.

I seriously don't get it.

I do think that the biggest thing may not reside in the W/L but the "feel" of the program. I don't go into any game thinking we will just get trounced. There used to be games where it wasn't worth it for the guys to even get off the bus. That isn't the case now. And I do think there's something to said about at least being competitive.

Let me know if you need help reading this chart.

Campbell has taken us to heights we haven't enjoyed since at least McCarney if not Earle Bruce.

Campbell is much better than Rhoads and anybody who even wants to compare them is looney.

That said, I'm not going to rely on SP+. Winning games matters. Last year's team went 7-6, it was a good team, but if a 7-6 team is our best team in 40 years it says more about the program than anything else.

This couldn't be any farther from reality. We are literally living in one of the best runs in Iowa State football history and this is what you have to say? This is so lazy!
Let's see him extend the success beyond 3 years before anointing him our lord and savior. 2 of the 3 coaches preceding Campbell enjoyed similar 3-4 year stretches of success, which I have already mentioned, and the 3rd coach in that group only coached 2 years. The only thing Matt has done so far that Paul hasn't is finish in the top 3 of the conference. Even Mac did that once. I want to believe Campbell is going to continue to pull us up from the depths, but history isn't on his side, and neither is the evidence we've accrued so far this year. Forgive me for saying I'll wait to declare his reign as the greatest in school history, because right now, although it's been good, it is only tied with a handful of other guys who have produced similar runs over similar periods of time.

SP+ does a much better job of providing an objective rating between eras of past, current, and future team performance that mere W-L on their own. W-L are what a team accomplishes, though, you are correct about that.

SP+ also adjusts for strength of schedule and the strength of those victories. If W-L was literally your only goal, then we should be scheduling three cupcakes in the non-con every year (including dropping good 1-AA and G5 programs like UNI and Louisiana from future schedules, only the dregs here, no more Iowa). I could even take that further that, if the only thing you want is wins, then we might as well drop to the MAC instead of playing Big 12 opponents.

You would say leaving the Big 12 to win games is absurd, and you are right, but that is an implicit admission on your part that not all wins are exactly created equal. Beating Texas takes a bit more than Bowling Green State.

I repeat -- if you think things now are no better than the Rhoads era, then you have your eyes closed. Bring those early Rhoads teams into our modern schedules, and they are not going 3/4 on bowl trips. And the late era Rhoads teams, well, wow, you see what happens when Rhoads had to play a full round-robin against the B12.

Can you at least freakin acknowledge that CMC is beating good teams? To compare his body of work to the fools gold years of Danny Mac and CPR is honestly pretty insulting to what CMC and his staff have been able to accomplish. Danny Mac beat bad teams and thrived on a weak a** North schedule and the years we dodged both OU and Texas. CPR beat OSU on a weird Friday night in November and won on the road at an average Nebraska team. Feel free to rattle off some of the other big wins....

I'm only looking at the black and white results, which is what anyone else would be looking at as they thumb through their sports almanac.

I do realize CMC is beating good teams and I do appreciate where we're at, I'm just not confident in where we're heading.

So you don’t trust the process?

For reference, when the Big 12 switched to a 9 game conference schedule, Rhoads won 7 conference games (in 4 seasons from 2012-2015).

In a more comparative summary to CMC (as CMC is in year 5), Rhoads won a total of 8 games in years 5 through 7 (3-2-3 respectively).

We'll see if CMC follows/exceeds Rhoads' trend.

I didn't say they were comparable, but Campbell has defeated top 10 teams and is at least competitive with them. Getting beat by 50+ was so much fun.

I agree with you CMC is the best we've had but regarding coach Mac, he got the easy north schedule two years and then probably played the toughest schedule we've ever had for two years. That really stymied his program getting over the hump. There were years were UT, OU and Tech were all top 10ish type teams plus teams like Nebby, CU, Mizzou and K State all had legit teams during his time. If you're going to talk about his easy schedule, you have to give him credit for his tough schedules as well. You can argue he coached in a tougher big 12 than CMC.

His '02 schedule started with #3 Florida State, then beat an Iowa team that won double digit games, also included #20 Nebraska, @#2 OU, @#7 Texas, @#12 Kansas State and @#17 Colorado. That's tougher than anything this staff has faced. Imagine if that team had gotten to play the easy south rotation. It's probably a 10 win team that plays for the big 12 title.

I still trust it, I'm not giving up on this team. I'm just illustrating that CMC's tenure isn't this glorified pillar of success that has never been reached in school history before.

I think we are a bunch that is pretty jaded to thinking we may be on to something, only to revert back to the basement. It happened with Mac. With CPR, you felt OSU would be a turning point. I also remember in 2012 thinking we may have had something when we started 4-1 including a win on the road over a ranked TCU team, after which we managed to win 2 more conference games.

I think it's just hard to believe that success here isn't fleeting, and with the way last year ended and this year started I think that fear is sneaking into people's heads.
