So where do we stand now on the OL?

Downing going down with an injury was instant disaster for the Clones today. His backup was clearly not ready to play. So: 1) Is Downing's injury minor, and will he be back for TCU. 2) What is the story on Hudson? Don't know if he was scheduled to start, but heard his name a lot as a potential starter.

It honestly doesn’t matter. Our OL is a bunch of pudgy farm boys. I’m not even trying to be mean when I say that. I’ve seen them in person and I literally ask myself “these guys are our offensive line?” Lol.

I tend to agree. I’ve always thought they looked soft. I’m sure they’re incredibly strong, but they don’t appear solid.

Hope we’re overreacting.

Downing will have a shot at the next level.
If he can stay healthy, he could be a mid round draft choice.

I was really hoping some of the younger scholarship guys like Treiber and Hufford would have been further along in their development, but obviously they're not. It's just disappointing to see that there is no apparent depth.

I’ve wondered for years if the spread scheme is best for the talent level of O Linemen they’re able to recruit. They rarely, if at all ever use the RB screen game. Is this because the linemen aren’t athletic enough to get out and block in space?

A walk-on that nobody has ever heard mentioned before comes in when Downing goes out, over some of the young scholarship guys. That's sad. The o-line is in worse shape than we thought. And that walk-on didn't play well. Downing is the only decent one of the bunch. Sean Foster hasn't improved at all in 5 years. How he was a 4 star recruit blows my mind. We always seem to have walk-ons play on the line and none of them are any good.

Remember when Tom Manning was named O-Line coach of the year at Toledo? We all got excited that we would finally have good o-line play at ISU. Hasn't happened. It's year 5 now so it's inexcusable.

I was wondering that as well. Breece would have amazing receiving stats if he played for most other teams.

A bunch of kids following their dream to play football in college get a shot at Iowa State, have some bad breaks, or aren't perfect, and anonymous guys in the biggest message board named "Dopey" and "Clones4good" mock them and their efforts; mock their dreams. I'm not sure if you're both dopey or what you're "good" for, but this is just a game. And they're all doing something you wish you could do.

I try to never blame the kids... it's not their fault that they might not be Big 12 level football players... not many people are. It's the coaches fault that this is the best they can recruit to ISU.

Hufford is listed as Downing's backup on the depth chart. So is Hufford not healthy either?

It's apparent that our starters aren't great.... and the depth isn't there either evidentally.

It took them >1 year to add a QB sneak. Enough said.

On that play where Brock got sacked, the left tackle just stood there and watched the defensive end blow right past him. Was that Foster?

Yes.

Oughta just turn it into a 4 yards in the dust type of deal and keep pass game more of a play action to get chunk yardage.

The lack of development is very disheartening. It is such a blow to morale when guys who you think should be in the 2 deeps don't get playing time over walk ons when the starter goes down. It's year 5 and I'm left wondering what it is that Matt Campbell has done to warrant all the job offers we always hear about. Like, what does he do well as a coach? It sure as hell isn't hiring assistants, developing players, really good position coach, or calling plays. Right now, his entire ISU legacy boils down to recruiting a decent QB and bringing a defensive coordinator with him who had a good trick or two up his sleeve. What am I missing?
