So where do we stand now on the OL?

While in college I went to spring break in South Padre Island in 2006 and partied with some Oklahoma State lineman and they were the most massive humans I have ever seen. They weren't fat either, looked like all muscle. I am 6'3 and 220lbs and made me feel like I was 5ft tall. We need those type of guys IMO

The lack of development is very disheartening. It is such a blow to morale when guys who you think should be in the 2 deeps don't get playing time over walk ons when the starter goes down. It's year 5 and I'm left wondering what it is that Matt Campbell has done to warrant all the job offers we always hear about. Like, what does he do well as a coach? It sure as hell isn't hiring assistants, developing players, really good position coach, or calling plays. Right now, his entire ISU legacy boils down to recruiting a decent QB and bringing a defensive coordinator with him who had a good trick or two up his sleeve. What am I missing?

He turned the 2017 team into a pretty good team and the 2018 team was pretty good too. A bit of a step back last year but they were young and missing 1/2 the offense (DM and HB) but still put together a winning record.

For me some cracks started showing in 2018 with two much relying on athletes over basics. They were getting hammered by KSU before some luck went their way and Montgomery started to get loose.

Even yesterday when they got behind you got the sense that they were figuring to hit on a big play to regain the lead but with no sense of urgency. There doesn't need to be panic but in that situation it's time to tighten up and reassert yourself one play at a time and there was none of that.

Season is already over. We can’t even lose by two scores to a lousy Sun Belt team. O-Line is going to get absolutely destroyed in Big 12 play with or without Downing back.

Yea a UL sun belt team that finished last year ranked ahead of alot of P5 teams in final rankings who finished 11-3 and will not lose a game rest of year IMO.. Should we still have won? yes...but "Lousy sun belt team"? uhm no. THey will win the Sun belt.

UL had more guys drafted into the NFL last year than ISU has had in past 5 years..

That's how bad this program was when CMC took over.

As for the OL...They played well at times and in 1st half opened some nice holes for Breece and protected Purdy...Then Downing goes down and it all goes to shitter...That is on CMC and staff.

That's pretty much it. Some big time upsets, but a lot of mediocre results as well. He speaks about being "elite", but the product on the field, well, it's not so elite. The best programs feature the best linemen, and frankly we haven't seen much of that. Not just in recruiting, but more importantly in overall development.

On a bright note, we went under center several times as many on this site would want, and our line got a good push. That's a positive.

Also didn't spend 20 seconds ****ing around with motion pre-snap.

Saved that for about every other play. Nothing gets the opponents' defense on skates more than everyone staring at the sidelines for 15 seconds for the signals and walking around to get set.

Completely agree. It’s just a bad sign foster was the starter for the game. It’s clear he has never devolved and Treiber is still behind in the coaches eyes.

Campbell has always said he'd rather play a kid to late as opposed to being to early.

I know, I’m just angry after the game. ULL isn’t terrible, but we should’ve beat them, especially since we are considered top 25 and a possible candidate to play for the conference ship. I feel like this team won’t live up to the hype and will just let us all down this year.

It honestly doesn’t matter. Our OL is a bunch of pudgy farm boys. I’m not even trying to be mean when I say that. I’ve seen them in person and I literally ask myself “these guys are our offensive line?” Lol.

Imagine being from Iowa, being a fan of the state agricultural school, and typing that comment. And getting likes on it. Absolutely abhorrent.

Has anyone said anything about Hudson yet? It's never a good sign when the first injury happens and you have never even heard the new guy's name. That's not the depth we're needing this year, though OL was going to be the most vulnerable.

Well, that was proven to be a mistake vs Iowa 2 years ago vs Iowa, and probably will be a mistake yesterday.
My father in law was a head coach for many years in HS and and OL coach in Juco for a decade. It’s not the same level, but the guy is an OL savant and has coached several FBS OL. Has gone to every clinic and open practice he could. He said two years ago Foster simply doesn’t have the hips to be an effective T in today’s game, and there’s pretty much no chance he ever will. With the smaller and faster edge guys in the Big 12 he just isn’t made for it. He said if he was coaching Foster after practice #1 he’d move him to G and see if you can get his pad level down and turn him into a road grader in the run game.

Time to sit foster and insert Grant Treiber at LT. Foster was a liability in pass pro and in the run scheme last weekend.

Grant had offers from Nebby, Oregon, and many others. It is time to see what he has. Overall I thought their run blocking was serviceable, we avg'd 5 yards per carry

Hufford is listed as Downing's backup on the depth chart. So is Hufford not healthy either?

It's apparent that our starters aren't great.... and the depth isn't there either evidentally.
I was wondering that about Hufford as well. Even if he was hurt, there are other scholarship guys that could have played. Downing really is the only good player on the line. Newell isn't bad but I wouldn't say he is good. I hope Treiber starts at LT the rest of the season. Foster's footwork is awful.

I don't know about the OL....but I just turned on the replay on ESPNU and that 3rd and 7 with 5 minutes left......woof. We need Lines, plural.....and what is see is just players with the instinct coached out of them. A draw play for 20 yards? seriously? bend and bend and bend defense.
But hey, we are on TV. That Chizik logo is selling a lot of merchandise everywhere...
