My understanding that is precisely what they will do. Pre-season, no one has played so all teams are considered. Once play has begun, only teams participating are considered. How they going to continue to put teams in the polls that are not playing? Just leave them out
Using the top-25 that excludes those not participating, ISU will play @ #24 TCU, vs. #23 Baylor, @ #11 Oklahoma State, @ #10 Texas, vs. #4 OU.
Woof.

Yeah that sucks. They're going to get their doors blown off. 0-10.Looks like a difficult schedule but how would you like to be Arkansas?

Yeah it will mean a lot to win it all. You are going to have to beat some great teams to win a title this year. Naysayers are just salty. It seems very weird to even have rankings this fall with so many teams not playing. A team can win the “national title“ and it really won’t mean anything.
That's nasty. Holy crap that might be one of the worst schedules I have seen in my 46 years on earth. I mean I would guess Missouri is the easiest school on that list.

I was listening to the Arkansas coach on ESPN Saturday. 2 non-conference games were replaced with Georgia and Florida.

Huh? Ohio State is the only team of “so many teams not playing” That might have made the playoffs.
Honestly I’m OK with it, you know if Iowa State wins the Big12 in a normal year we are left out of the playoffs. We have a SHOT this year. Obviously Oklahoma is the favorite, and Texas might finally be back in contention, but we are in the conversation.
If Iowa State won the Big 12 and ended the season with one loss or less they're in the playoffs
Zero losses? Absolutely. One loss? Better hope at least one of the other four P5 conference champions have more than one loss, especially if those champions are of a higher profile historically than ISU.
