I've had an 18 foot Intex Saltwater pool for 8 years. We love it and use it a ton. Built a deck around 1/4 of the pool and that is great too. Really adds to the pool. I leveled the dirt by hand with a shovel (PITA) and then used crushed limestone to help level it. My pool is 95% level with only one spot about 1/2 inch lower than the rest of the pool. Getting the ground level is the hardest part by far.

My backyard neighbor got one because his daughter begged for it, so he was proactive and leveled the yard and put down a concrete slab to sit it on.

I think I saw her swimming maybe twice, and he ended up going apeshit on the pool and destroyed it. Now he just has a random round slap in the middle of his backyard.

Shuffleboard anyone?

That is a good idea. The heating is another good point. You would be surprised how slow water is to warm up and how much a good rain can cool it down. If you have especially women folk around that are touchy with water temp they will either hardly get in it or you will have a heater.

You will only have the heater until you get your first utility bill...just sayin'!

Nah. No fence needed in our neighborhood. All the hot babes stand in their windows with binoculars taking it in.

We had various versions of the inflatable and intex pools, then in 2012 decided to do a better above ground pool. Went with a doughboy 16-32 and brought in a skid loader to make a 7" deep end, while placing it 2 feet into ground. It was in the $4-5k range installed and then we spent the money on a deck and plumbing it like an in-ground pool with a heater. It is still going strong but will need the liner replaced next year. We considered an in ground but a basic started at $20-$25k at that time.

We are still the Clampets as the next door neighbor has a swim up bar in their pool (yes in Iowa). We have enjoyed our pool but it does take a commitment. We keep it open from April to October.

I have had above ground pools for about 15 years. Put up and take down every year. Started with 10', progressed through 12' and 14' and now have 16'. I put in a patio in back corner of backyard to get a level spot (dug down 12" in back left, raised up 12" in front right). Just like a deck, I put in wood frame, completely level, filled dirt and sand between the frame sections, covered sides with landscape brick and put patio block on top. It has worked great. We use it for fire pit and patio stuff other 8.5 months.

Best thing for the pool is get scrap carpet from someone putting in new and put that down under the pool every year. Provides soft underfoot and protects the pool. The carpet does get pretty bad after 3-4 years too so you will have to resource a couple of times. I get 4-6 years per pool so my cost per year (25% pool cost plus chemicals, water, etc) probably runs about $150.

I don't use it much but kids did when they were here and wife and neighbor lady use it most days in summer (work in school so off).

A seven inch deep end? What was the shallow side?

This covers several threads, the above ground pool and woodworker's thread. I threw this platform together in two afternoons for about $60. It is hard to see but I put in a block patio under the pool. The platform abuts against the edge of the patio with inside struts on the patio blocks.
The building is my yard shed and the fence is mine too (both sides good for that discussion).
