I get the feeling this next year is going to be one ugly death for Steve. I like Steve but things are not trending well losing our opportunity with likely the best two players we were after.

Would love to hire a Bobby Lutz or Doc Sadler type of X's and O's guy instead of another recruiter. That's just me. Fred always seemed to get a "real coach" that was not exactly the best recruiter but could run a practice and improve the product.

A coach making a move like this says one of two things.

1. Coach needs some head coaching experience on his resume and is wiling to take a dip in salary to get that with the hope of more money and a better job in the future.

2. Coach knows or at least thinks that there is a high probability that the entire staff could be dismissed at the end of next season, and he wants to get ahead of it.

Could be either one.

There are more possible options. For example, a 3rd could be that Prohm was told he had to make changes to his staff and Small was given the opportunity to move on under his own power. I have ZERO knowledge of the situation, just saying the options you listed aren't the only ones possible.

You could be right, but generally when a head coach is told to make changes in his staff, word of that gets out. So far that has not occurred, so then it goes back to my 2 assumptions.

This is a coach that has been with Prohm for all five seasons after following him from Murray St., he is from Mississippi so maybe he see this as a chance to get back to that region of the country. In the end, we will most likely never know the reason he left.

Honestly I think the staff only has one more run at this thing, and god knows how you hire, interview, get them relating to the team, etc. I'm not sure a staff shakeup would be a good thing.

If I were Small I'd take it though. If Prohm does get fired after this this year he'd be taking an even bigger pay cut to be an assistant at a mid-major again.

I think a staff shakeup is needed, but I'm not sure Small was/is the weak link here. Maybe the guy that never had a winning season as McDermott's assistant but is still here somehow?

Good Luck to Small if he does leave for a HC job.
I get the defensive specialist idea but, I'd prefer a well connected Midwest recruiter. That is one area Prohm hasn't really replaced since Otz left.

These don't have to be mutually exclusive. College basketball staffs are small enough people need to fill both a "coach role" and a "recruiting role". I think defensive specialist is a big key to the offseason. I also agree that person should provide recruiting connections that enhance our coverage.

I actually really like Small. He's a great guy. That being said I hope he takes it because a staff shakeup is needed

I would agree with this. I've said before it's not really clear to me what everyone on the staff's role is, but my impression is that Small is probably the strongest guy on the bench. Having a shakeup though to me is the top priority of the off season. Yes we need to bring in talent, but we have to bring in someone that at least makes it look like we have some coherent plan on the defensive end of the court.

Also, if this goes through, Prohm could do a "hail mary" and hire Fizer to try to appease the fan base, create excitement, etc. I mean, CPR did it with Mangino, lol

Kind of like the McDermott best player ever at Iowa State Jeff Grayer hire ?

Zing!

I’m hoping for a Nurse like hire, but actually getting the coaching we paid for.

There are good assistants that can help this program, although it’s getting increasingly harder for Steve to be able to lure them here

They already have Hobbs on staff. Although it is interesting to think about whether Billy Kennedy would be interested in a one year position.

You mean like Robinson and his Chicago connections?

I think everyone likes Steve personally and that is what makes this situation doubly painful.

He's no Gene Chizik.

This staff needs a shakeup and we're not losing much as far as recruiting.

Hopefully he takes the job.
