Not exactly sure.
I would love to have the money to start a foundation. We've been doing our yearly events to donate to Nebraska Spina Bifida. It would be so cool to have a foundation that you could donate money to them and other worthwhile causes.

Whenever I buy my 2-3 lottery tickets per year, I always tell myself that 10% is going to an endowment so no matter what happens a good chunk of money will help people out every year.

79-10 @BCClone? Good lord....

I also have to go back up there today to look at a house, I screwed up because I avoid the towns in that school for a week after games. I have gotten by butt chewed out countless times since people from there know me and my parents. I always say I can’t defend their actions and the coach didn’t do that. Kids school is definitely athletics over academics and I hate it but I’m stuck.

Because the coach feels the starters should play 3 quarters. My daughter is the first guard off the bench and she got 1 minute per quarter last night. It’s sad. The starters complain if they don’t get full games and their parents want them to get stats. It’s embarrassing.

Yeah, sounds like the gf's high school. Im not one to call off the dogs until a certain point, but thats a bit ridiculous.

Looking at the MaxPreps site for Girl's Basketball it seems this happens a lot. Check out the Xcellent 25 on the right hand side

https://www.maxpreps.com/list/sched...28/2020&gendersport=girls,basketball&state=ia
The first time they played it was 88-18. That is one huge negative for a school district is when its a bunch of little towns pieced together with some pretty good gaps between towns. If you look at the smaller schools that have sporting success, its generally schools that have a good sized "home" town because that is where the most of your kids will come from and whenever the town is not where the school is, the percentage of participants seems to drop off.

Where Cj is from, that school has struggled in all sports for about 10-15 years because it seems to be a school where teachers land and then move on. I always believe that the best combination is having coaches who are teachers, they can have a better connection to the kids and it seems to carry over. I have pushed to have my kids heavily involved in at least one non athletic pursuit while in HS, but at the current school it is tough due to an unbelievable amount of parents, teachers, and coaches that are "home-grown" and they are reliving their youth and trying to claim those victories that they never got while in HS as coaches or parents. So the kids get pushed to do things for one individual sport for most of the year if they want to see any time. I'm not joking when I say this town is full of in-breds. I was listing second cousin marriages that I knew of (as an outsider) and off the top of my head I was on my second hand.

This has been building for many, many years. We of course have the lion's share of it invested, although gradually we are working toward having at least half of it in liquid form. We also have a congregation member - who is very knowledgeable about all things financial - who oversees our investments.

Those starters aren't learning a whole lot by dominating an undermanned team. I feel bad for the kids who show up to practice every day, and pretty much know they're never going to get a shot.

Last night was the quarterly meeting of the St. Olaf Lutheran Church Foundation board (yeah, I'm a member). We have an endowment approaching $2.5M....every year we earmark a portion of it to be granted for things like missionary support, community projects (like homes for battered women, etc), and so on.

Last night we voted to give away nearly $100,000 for several very worthy causes in the community. It's rewarding to be involved in things like that. :)
What an awesome thing to be a part of!

I joined the Knights of Columbus for that very reason. It seemed a good way to be involved in the church and also help causes outside of our parish. We have the most active council in our district but we can't do anything to that scale. Our Council did get a Coats for Kids program going and this year we gave away some ridiculous number of new coats and snowpants for kids who otherwise may not be able to afford them. Something like 800 coats and 600 snowpants this year alone if I remember correctly. Now our Brother Knight who spearheaded it has been helping multiple other councils get their CfK programs going. As you might imagine it is a big need both in urban and rural Minnesota. One of the latest councils he is helping serves one of the larger Native American Reservations. While we handle the logistics and raise some of the money through our projects, we couldn't do anything to this scale without some major local private and commercial donors who have been very generous - shout out to them!

The Catholic Church both world-wide and in our Archdiocese has gotten a black-eye in the past several years so it is nice to do something that can help to improve the public perception of the Church. We did just get some good news this week as they announced that the Archdiocese has been universally surpassing the goals set forth in the agreement the Archdiocese entered into after the abuse scandal.

At some point you need to reward the other players rather than padding stats.

I may have posted about it - I don't remember - but I ended up coaching an indoor soccer game last weekend because daughter's coach and assistant coach couldn't make it. The other team was overmatched even though they could do multiple line changes while we had only 3 subs. When we were up 6 or 7 to 0 at the half I told the girls that we would start the half as normal (to keep momentum going) but quickly start playing out of position so we had defenders playing as forwards and midfielders and forwards playing as defenders, etc. Apparently there were a couple of parents grousing on the sidelines that I hadn't instructed our players out of position to start passing the ball back and forth and not take shots. I felt that this was a chance to reward players who do the dirty work all the time and play defense to get a chance to score a goal and get a little glory. It is also a chance for all players to experience other positions fully and gain a little appreciation for what their teammates do. I also thought it was a good chance for them to be exposed to other positions so if the coach needs them to play out of position later in the season they aren't getting a first taste in a high pressure situation. But apparently I am a bad person because the final score ended up being 10-0. The other team apparently lost their previous game 8-0.

And you display the title proudly.
I read your post in the other thread and realized it was directed at a poster I ignore. I viewed the ignored posts...
My opinion after the first post of his in that thread: I wonder if his arm hurts?
After the second post: Guess not, 'cause he's still patting himself on the back.

The dude is really insufferable, and bores me to tears with his pompous screeds. I liked your response to him (even if you may not view him the same way I do). :D

Gotta figure out how I’m spending my money now. I bought a lotto ticket and I’m supposed to get like 275 million in cash. Put 10% in a foundation, have the government take 50% the the remainder and that gives me about 100 million to spend. Should be a fun couple months.

These are things that happen behind the scenes. The churches I have belonged to aren't interested in pubby about their philanthropic efforts - they just want to do as much as they can for as many people as they can.

And we take pride in knowing we were part of that help. Organized religion is taking it ont he chin right now (there's a CF thread to prove it) but despite people's claims of hypocrisy, we still manage to do some good.

It's the broad paintbrush thing. Everyone has one - some use it more frequently than others.

My stepson played QB in high school (he was the backup) and didn't see the field until the starter was injured. As sophomores, they were playing down in Ames. They were behind 61-7 in the third quarter and the coach still had all the starters in the game.

When Joe got home, I asked him if anybody quit after the game. He said yes, some of the second teamers turned in their equipment. I asked him if he was one of them, and he said no, he planned on sticking it out.

I told him I was proud of him for that, but that I would have told that coach to shove it. Those second stringers get their brains beat out every day in practice, and knowing you have virtually no shot to play in a game has to be a huge disappointment.
