Coal Flansburg Commits

Buddy of mine has family in the Solon area. They said this kid was a Hawkeye lifer but loves everything about the ISU staff and couldn't wait to commit. I don't know what he had for offers etc, but sounds like a good get.

There's nothing better than converting a Hawkeye (and family) to the good side, right in the heart of hok country.

Yes! Did he have an Iowa offer?

Iowa State is his only offer and I hope it stays that way, because if for some reason Kirk thinks he needs an eleventh fullback on his roster they'll get him. He's not highly rated, but I have a soft spot in my heart for Iowans that hit like a truck. I want that intensity in a Cyclone uniform.

I highly doubt Iowa offers.

We plan on taking only 3 more LB commits and thats only if Henrich jumps on board. If he goes elsewhere, we will only take 2 more LB's this cycle.

I'm not so sure that Flansburg ends up at LB.

I think he fits the H-Back role in the ISU offense.

Was this about Coal? Or another guy TBA? They usually post before the commitments, right?

This quote from Alex Halsted's article over at 247

“They really don’t know,” Flansburg said of where Iowa State wants him. “They can use me in a lot of ways like fullback, H-back type, or linebacker. They think I’m a utility guy and I know that too so I think that helps me a lot in recruiting and getting recruited. I’ve talked to both [position coaches] about that and what my role will be on offense and defense.”

Kid hits like a mule kicks. Like.
I love big hitters as well, as long as they wrap up as well. Nothing takes away from a big hit like a ball carrier that reels from the hit, regains his footing and gains another 10 yards because a big hit was more important than wrapping up and completing the tackle.

This isn't a shot at Coal, more a comment about big hits vs. sure tackles.

I could give a damn about stars in Coal’s case. I’m pumped we got his commitment. Dude looks like he has a nastiness about him that I can get down on

Parallels to a hs mlb kid I knew who started as a d end at toledo. That could be a possibility. At 250 or 260, his bull rush could be deadly. If not HBack would be wonderful.

On a related note to big hitters and wrapping up the tackle I loved seeing the tackling drill in the spring practices videos where the tacklers were turning over as they contacted the tackling dummies. If this motion is repeated while live tackling it is much more difficult for a ball carrier to break the tackle and keep his feet. Too many times you see tackling drills where they are taking the dummy straight to the ground. That tackle motion is much easier to break and keep your feet.
