Well that and in both industries the waves of consolidation did not help as well. A lot of giants bought up massive numbers of print and radio outlets and proceeded to squeeze every penny out of them, often at the cost of local content and talents, causing people to see less value in them and quit subscribing.

Industries began the downward cycle of consolidations and mergers when revenues are stagnant or declining. I agree with you that they can mismanage that process, oftentimes badly (e.g., letting go of a talent or on-air personality with a strong audience, saving a dime yet costing yourself a dollar), but the fundamental impetus here is declining advertising revenue for all forms of media because of the Internet.

The ears and the eyeballs are still there -- they just want it for free, online, and without ads, and the Internet gives that to them even if there is a drastic decline in the quality of the content in the meantime. Producing quality content takes time and money that just is not there anymore, which has set off the downward spiral killing local newspapers and radio stations. This is just the latest victim of the slaughter.

Media has done themselves no favors either. We get crappy music on the radio. Crappy DJs. Ad after Ad. Same for print media. Papers like the Rag have little to content, and if they do there is little local news in it.

Story time (and this applies to your comment, too, @alarson) --

I have a friend who works for the Washington Post. She told me they have a "big board" in the newsroom, sort of like a stock ticker or a scoreboard at a baseball game, showing you the daily traffic to different articles and features.

One day, they had a very talented reporter release a long article about FGM in Africa, particularly in Somalia. This is an issue of special and personal importance to that reporter. The piece took months of work, was extensively researched with quantitative information from world health organizations, non-profits, and interviews with people involved with the issue on four continents from political leaders, public health experts and doctors, experts on Somalian and African culture, society, and economic development, generals, religious scholars, really just everybody a good journalist would approach.

...and that piece tanked. Last on the board.

What was first?

Yet another article from an author who basically writes the same "**** TRUMP!!!" article over and over again and copy-pastes the old one into the new one.

And that is at the Washington Post -- one of the most august newspapers in the country, even the world, covering national and world politics and winning countless awards for doing so, and even with sugar daddy Jeff Bezos and his billions behind it to subsidize against losses and giving it high-minded ideals like, "Democracy dies in darkness."

Even there, they are told, "Get your numbers up."

What sells is not the conscientious, nuance, detailed, intelligent, and uncomfortable stuff. You are better off writing shallow, mean-spirited, "us versus them" articles that complain about a problem but do not try to intelligently and fairly come up with solutions, particularly about celebrity-politicians. Throwing bombs makes you money.

Also couldn't ever figure out why I couldn't get any cyclone games on their app even when it was 100.3.

That's a "Learfield IMG holds exclusive rights and won't allow affiliates to broadcast over the internet" thing. Very very common.

There are SOOOO many facets to how/why this went down. The internet, subsequently followed by social media, greatly changed how we consume news, information, etc. Traditional media (newspaper, radio, TV) have _tried_ to keep up with it...adapt. I know a lot of newspaper and radio outlets incorporate video into their reporting now. All three types have websites where you can read the stories. (And yes, sometimes behind a paywall) Radio stations stream their audio on the internet. Newspaper reporters/columnists have podcasts.

There's probably actual politics involved in this somehow...[ugh]...but I'm going to stay faaaaaaaaarrrr away from that.

At the end of the day, some very good people lost a job they loved to do. And that sucks.

I 100% agree with this post. If the content was better, maybe other avenue's to get our media fix wouldn't be as appealing. The downside comes when a void is created by lack of content. There is not much listening content out there for local teams other than CycloneFanatic. I love the site, but I will take in all content I can get my hands on. National shows could care less about Iowa and Iowa State. UNI, Drake, and other high school sports coverage will suffer even more since there is no way to get that content.

This is why I'm not so sure this isn't a good thing for them, while I'm sure it doesn't feel like it now. If today is any indicator there is a strong following for their commentary, and there is ample technology available to reach that audience without the middle-man of a parent radio company. I imagine many of their advertisers would be glad to follow them to a podcast.

I kind of liked that the Morning Rush was not 100% sports talk actually. They had just enough sports related stuff mixed in with the "other" just like Murph and Andy does too that it keeps things loose and fun. I remember when Larry Cotlar was the morning show and everyone here was saying how awful Cotlar and Company was and he was WAY more sports talk than anything that has filled that time slot since he was fired. Could they of had more sports related guests on than Seneca and Mark Farley? Sure, they did lack some regular guests that other shows have but I'm sure it's also hard to find people interested in calling into a show from 6-8am, especially if they are in a time zone where it could be an hour or 2 earlier than Iowa. I'll miss that show just like I will miss Sports Fanatics even more, not sure what I will fill the void with now as the national shows suck and I am not much for shock jock radio either.

Yeah, that's a good question. I'm not sure what I'll even choose to listen to and from work. Definitely sucks they went this route. I do like Dan Patrick, but Cowherd is only good in small doses even when I'm sometimes going to get food. But searching for local content during the day isn't as easy as just turning on the radio.

Realizing this is going to mess with my listening day here. I don't have to trade the Sports Fanatics for Sean Hannity do I? I mean that's not even in my wheelhouse.

Local news could get a really good story if they started calling around to all of KXNO advertisers to see how many are pulling ads now that 2 popular local shows are gone. Lot of those personalities that were let go brought some of those in or did spot ads endorsements

I hadn’t even thought about things like the Cyclonefanatic radio show on Thursday nights and ISU women’s sports angle.

Nothing about me is cool. That was established a long time ago.

Towards your question --

Your frugalness and utilitarianism actually makes it more cool in my book. I drive a truck and when I drive my wife’s mid size SUV I can barely stand it. This would eliminate that problem.
