I was reading an article on the NY Times about how Gerwig had sourced the info to try and make it a little more relevant in today's climate. I love Alcott's "Eight Cousins" and "Rose In Bloom" books more than the "Little Women" ones, and Gerwig stole a few empowered lines from those books to try and flesh out Jo a bit more. She also used a ton of art and such - oh, here's the link, it's worth a read: LINK Gerwig did her homework, and I just love Saoirse Ronan.

Yeah, Florence Pugh just looks like a woman. There's no way to make her be an innocent pre-teen.
I have a crush on Saoirse Ronan that I don't think will ever go away.

What a shock - no Greta Gerwig (or any other women) in the Best Director spot:

https://oscar.go.com/news/nominations/oscar-nominations-2020-list-nominees-by-category

Hot takes:

- Tarentino will get either his first best director, or his third best screenplay (tying him w/Woody Allen, I think?). I doubt he'll get both.
- Parasite almost has to get best international.
- Either 1917 or Once Upon A Time...for best picture
- They'll throw Gerwig a paltry bone for adapted screenplay

I loathed Little Women. I am not a fan of Greta Gerwig at all. She's a good director but I don't think Lady Bird deserved any accolades either. Just not my cup of tea I guess. So I'm ok with her not getting nominated. There are many other movies directed by women that deserved it more than she did. I also think she's a homewrecker so that doesn't help either. Getting Noah Baumbach to leave her 7 month pregnant wife (Jennifer Jason Leigh) was pretty craptastic on both she and Noah's part.

Best Pic is between Hollywood, Parasite and 1917. Hollywood has the edge.
Best Director will be Mendes or Bong Joon-Ho. Quentin doesn't have a shot here I don't think.

Acting categories are basically all but over. Phoenix, Zellweger, Pitt, and Dern are all locked and loaded. Any loss by one of them will be a complete shocker. Zellweger is most vulnerable.

Parasite will win International easily.

Hollywood will win Pic, Screenplay, Pitt.

Little Women will win adapted but shouldn't. Jojo is the best adapted. (I really really hated Little Women lol)

I really, really enjoyed it (much more than the last three or four Tarentino films all of the way through) - I don't particularly think it's POTY, but it's a total love letter to Hollywood, and they adore that sort of thing. That's what has me thinking it. BUT, war movies are always a hit.

War movies aren't that much of a hit actually. Last war movie to win best picture was Hurt Locker. Before then, English Patient (and that's a stretch including it as a war movie). Before that Braveheart. Countless war movies nominated in last 30 years. Not many wins. That coupled with the fact that there is no acting nomination to go with it means 1917 is a bit behind the 8-ball. Historically best pic winners have at least one acting nom tied to it. Last BP winner without one was Slumdog Millionaire.

Do you htink Hollywood is the best pic, or do you think that the Academy will just love it that much? I could certainly see it winning the 3 that you mentioned, I just don't think it was the best film of the year. It was a ton of fun, and I've seen it twice in the past month, but it was missing a little (umph) to push it over that hump for me.

I personally think Parasite should win running away, there have been some great movies but the way Bong Joon-Ho put it all together was masterful. 1917 is just straight up impressive. It was between 1917 and Parasite for me?

I might be in the minority, I thought "Once Upon a Time..." was good, not great. I've always been a Tarantino guy. Just thought it dragged and at times wasn't sure what the arc of the story was supposed to be.

"Little Women" was really, really good. She definitely should've been included.
I don't think you're in the minority there. Then again I'm not a QT guy. Can't say I have hated any of his movies but never saw the greatness seemingly everybody else sees. I dont get it and I never will.

Jojo Rabbit was the best movie of the year in my opinion then Parasite. Both are in the top of the decade for me. But I think Hollywood, Parasite, Jojo, and 1917 are all worthy if they won Best Pic. You have to think of it from the voters point of view. The majority of the academy are still old, white, straight, male voters. It's getting better but they are still the largest part of voters. An original movie, filmed in THEIR city, in a movie ABOUT their industry, with a popular director and hugely popular cast with a backdrop of a horrible murder of those in their industry...they will eat that all up. The other thing I don't think casual moviegoers realize is how they vote for best pic. It is NOT by who has the most votes (it should be). It's done by a preferential ballot which really messes with things.

I would probably choose Parasite in a heartbeat to win but it can win International Film and the academy can call it good. I just don't think a film in 100% subtitles is ready to win best picture yet. Same can be said for Irishman. I don't think hollywood is ready to say a streaming service made the best movie. Even if it WAS the best pic, I don't think it would win. It's all political with this stuff, sadly.

So glad to hear someone else praise JoJo, I loved that movie man. Hit me like a ton of bricks, too. Unfortunately, don't think it has the legs to beat out the big dogs this year, but love I Taika and his direction, I don't think I've seen anything he's associated with and not laughed or enjoyed it wholeheartedly.

To your second point, though, that is why I asked. I can certainly seeing the voters go "oh, ha! Look, how fun, they did a movie in the place we all know and love, AND its a period peice." So to that point, I completely agree that it could win because of that. I was not in love with The Irishmen, it was good, the acting was as good as you'd expect, and it was well directed, the story was just a bit 'meh' to me. It picked up at some parts and I kept trying to get myself to fully engage, but I couldn't, don't know why really.

Your comment on the streaming service and subtitle aspect is interesting, never really thought about it too much. But I don't think that that will hold Parasite back with Roma somewhat breaking through that phase in 2018. Or maybe that is my wishful thinking hoping the academy has changed... (unlikely)

Roma broke through but it also landed 10 Oscar noms and won three. Parasite, which is heads and shoulders better than Roma, 'only' got 6 this year.

I 100% get if people don't like Jojo Rabbit. But to me it is brilliant and hilarious and incredibly sad and yet entirely original. It's so good.

Why do you think you hated Little Women so much? I'm totally curious - for some people, they hate period pics. I heard some complaining that it was a movie about white people, but that's the source material, which makes it hard to change and keep it at all true to the time/story. Or is it just hating Gerwig?

I don't think she's a great person, for sure. I liked Little Women far better than Lady Bird, but I also liked that a fair amount.

A LOT of it is period pieces but most of it is that I have tried every single version of that book adaption into a movie and it just does nothing for me. I wish it did, it just doesn't as many times as I try haha.

I think I like him better as a writer than a director.

The Lighthouse getting snubbed is what stands out to me; should've gotten a nomination for Directing, Best Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay at the very least, possibly supporting actor for Pattinson. No nomination for Taron Egerton is curious as well, especially after Rami Malek's win last year.

I'm upset that Biggest Little Farm didn't get a documentary nomination. That's a great movie. However, For Sama is remarkable, and should probably win. Gut-wrenching to watch, but everyone *needs* to see it to understand what has gone on in Syria.

word has it Taron might have campaigned a bit over the line for many’s liking. Hosting a private party for all 94 Golden globe voters with a concert by Elton John worked. Academy didn’t like that.

Looking forward to that one. I thought "American Factory" was solid.
