I've heard about putting chocolate in chili but not for that reason. I've also heard that using coffee as your liquid as opposed to water or broth is supposed to give it a good flavor.
I don't add any liquid to my chili beyond what comes from the ingredients. That is probably why you can stand a spoon up in my chili - kind of like the old soup commercials.

I know someone else that does that.

When you add beef or chicken broth to it you also add tomato paste to thicken that up. The next time I make chili I am going to cut back a little on the beef broth in order to keep the moisture level down a bit because of all the moisture release by the onions and peppers. When I make chili I follow a general recipe and try little differences each time to tweak it.

Krogers has flat iron steaks on sale this week. $5.99 lb as opposed to $9.99. I should pick some up but I still have ones in my freezer that I have been trying to use up.
I saw something about a chili feed for a fundraiser. I should see if I can find out when that is and make a roaster full. The bar that is putting it on said it would donate a roaster of chili but they would need more.

I have no recipe but a general path I take and experiment from as well. The moisture for mine comes from onions, peppers, beans and tomatoes.

Mrs. Velo doesn't like big chunks of meat in her chili so I am constrained to ground meats in the chili. I usually use half and half of a spicy pork sausage with ground beef or ground turkey. I generally have to use the ground beef surreptitiously since apparently it isn't good for us. Never mind that there is no issue with a nice think medium rare steak or fat juicy hamburger patties though.

Excellent call! I have done this, too, and the spicy food fans in our family loved it. I have also taken to mixing several types of chili peppers, including jalapeno, serrano, and habanero. Gently on that last one!

If you're trying to get rid of them, I can send you my address.

With the kids and others who can't handle spicy I have reluctantly cut way back on the peppers. However recently I have used a few more peppers but carefully removed and discarded the seeds. This allows you to get more pepper flavor without as much heat. Reviews have been favorable.

I saw this movie with Josh Brolin and Kate Winslet called "Labor Day." Josh makes chili using coffee in it.

I have no set recipe either, but do use spicy V-8 as a part of the liquid.

Lew and I have been trying to make a decision on our "next trip" since before Christmas, but hadn't settled on anything yet. We finally pulled the trigger Sunday night and booked an RC cruise from Copenhagen, Denmark to Tarragona, Spain, with stops in Norway, France, Portugal, and Gibraltar.
Here's the fun part: we impulsively offered to take our two oldest granddaughters (19 & 25) with us. They're both looking to see if they can get time off from work & school - but we're so excited about it! These are the two that are living independently now, in Ankeny & Des Moines, and come up to spend evenings having dinner and playing games all night with us, just because. I really hope they can go...we enjoy their company so much! Cross your fingers for them!

Couple of observations from Lew:
"Now I know how your dad felt back in 1998" - when he invited us on our first cruise (AND first European trip for both of us).
"You realize we're setting a precedent, right?" "Yup" from me. Then we both agreed it was good, because it guarantees us at least 7 more cruises. :D

Advice, with those age of grand daughters do not post too much itinerary info so WDSM and pants can’t also book.

Sure hope they get to go KC, I know I sure enjoy the time I get to spend with my nieces and nephews. Not quite that kind of trip though LOL.

Not too worried about the girls - they are well able to take care of themselves now. I defended them pretty heavily when I first started posting in here, though. It was kind of like open season on people's daughters & granddaughters, mostly from the single guys. That has mostly faded away I think it may be because some of you have teenaged daughters now and you tend to discourage that kind of behavior (although you guys still get pretty mouthy even now about models & actresses).
The "you" in this post is a generic "you", not a BC-specific "you".
