All Things Notre Dame

Growing up as a Catholic kid, the Irish have always been my #2 team (though I can't stand Kelly). This will be a rare time that I root against the Irish. Go Clones!
I'm Catholic and have always hated the Fighting Irish. Something about their smugness bothered me, plus there were like 5 local Catholic college around me which got more local press.

yeah, Notre Dame screwed Iowa over once. I find it funny that they still haven't gotten over it. Even Hawk fans in their 30's.

And ND has always spurned overtures from the Big Ten about joining them for football, so while ND would play Michigan or MSU regularly, the rest of the conference's greatness went unrecognized.

Which is sort of a deal breaker for Hawkeye fans.

Is this true? Seems odd, particularly as we bring 30k fans. Seems like between us, ND, and the public, they could sell tickets in the upper deck. Capacity with the upper deck is 65,000. Lower deck only must cut it to 40,000 max. This will keep Stub Hub prices high!
With the exception of the 2011 Game between FSU and ND, they average about 40,000, and it usually looks like lower bowl only. Might not be an official thing, but I think they only open up seating in the upper decks if warranted by selling out the lower bowl first? Just checked the CWB Ticket Site, and they are only selling lower bowl tickets at the moment.

Hope I am wrong and that we set a cardinal and gold attendance record this year!

fyi: 2002 would have been an Iowa State year with a win over UConn! Worst loss in ISU history IMO.

For some bizarre, unknown and mystical reason, Gonzaga hired Melissa Click after she was ejected from Mizzou. Gonzaga is a jesuit institution...or was, or pretends to be or whatever. Notre Dame also purports itself as a Catholic university. Just more FYI.

Confirmed true for last two years. Won't be surprised if they open it for us. It would be silly to sell just 40k or less tickets given demand from these two fan bases.

Spent about 2 hours today perusing about 6 ND websites, and was actually impressed by what I read. The usual " I can't believe we are playing ISU crowd"; but actually MANY informative posts that reference our stats, schedule, players, etc., that reinforce this game will not be a pushover! Many ranked us, according to stats, that we will be the 3rd best opponent they played all year. Gotta love well informed posters!!
I was surprised they had a pretty solid schedule too

When I was a young kid kid growing up in eastern Iowa in the early 70’s, I used to watch ND replays on one of the Quad City stations on Sunday mornings. Now, this may seem like a big up to most of you, but this was huge for a football fan when there were only three channels. This was also before there were any NFL pregame shows.

Was a nice change of pace from the cartoons of Boras and Natasha, Go Go Gophers, Rocky and Bullwinkle, Peabody and Sherman...there were a couple others I am forgetting as the Sunday line up paled to Saturday cartoons.

For some reason, this got me to thinking about carillons. Notre Dame claims to have the oldest in North America. Are there any older than Iowa State's besides Notre Dame?

The Bullwinkle the Moose Show was for adults...

edit: I remember those Sunday mornings very clearly. Bullwinkle was the last cartoon before we had to go to church. Ugh...

The Cornell Chimes are from 1867.

Windsor Memorial (Cathedral Church of St. Paul) in Des Moines, 1896.

Church of the Holy Spirit on the campus of Kenyon College (Ohio), 1879.

There may be more.

This "All Things Notre Dame" thread has told me nothing about Notre Dame. Alot about ya'll's childhood though, so there's that....I guess.
Notre Dame alumnus José Napoleón Duarte was once the head of a vicious military junta.

Former Notre Dame football player Joe Theisman changed the pronunciation of his last name from Theesman to Thizeman so that his name would rhyme with Heisman. He's also generally considered to be an insufferable douche. Because of this, many people aren't super upset that he suffered one of the most gruesome football injuries of all time.

They have a strictly enforced system of social rules called parietals. Even the name sounds like something from the dark ages.

Are you also Creighton, Boston College, or Georgetown fans? I've never understood the 'Catholics are fans of ND' thing. Unless it's just because of the movie.

You have to go back to how Catholics, and the Irish in particular, were discriminated against; that was a very real thing, and it kind of peaked in the 1920s. The Oregon School Law, the KKK, Al Smith, Vatican conspiracy theories, even up to JFK's election - this was all in the 20th century. Heck, even "Fighting Irish" is a negative stereotype, they just owned it.

So that's why some Irish and Catholics are fans of Notre Dame. It was something they could identify with and be proud of when they were still 2nd class citizens.

LOL. Thanks. When I opened the thread, I was really looking more for key players, offensive tendencies, defensive alignments, etc. etc., but I was way off. I'll do my own research.
