Ames Tribune:

Nicki and Joe Romare, owners of Whiskey River in Ames, said their plans for the building are still in the beginning phases, but they hope to open a casual restaurant in the space by late next summer.

“We are really at step one,” Nicki Romare said. “We have ideas and concepts, but we don’t have a menu, a name or anything else yet. It’s still just fresh and new.”

If they need ideas try getting the first Iowa franchise of Monk's. It's a long-time Wisconsin favorite bar and grill (Sports Bar--with more screens than any place I've been) which may be looking for their first excursion outside WI. Great food, good atmosphere, well-run and all-around awesome. I am sure it'd be a hit in Ames. I am not a big burger fan but Monk's has some of the best! https://www.facebook.com/monksbarandgrill/ also https://monksbarandgrill.com/

We don’t want too many Wisconsin folks coming down here. I’m on my guard when I go into Culver’s and kohl’s Incase there are serial killers roaming around.

Not sure what they have planned, but I'm really happy that the Whiskey River folks bought Olde Main. Really good news after a long string of bad news related to that place.

The last thing Ames needs is more franchised restaurants. How about something original? That is what Main Street is all about anyway.

I don’t believe they are looking to do anything with a franchise, but you never know. In the article it mentions the potential of a concept similar to Acme Feed and Seed in Nashville

Which means that they want to have multiple venues in various parts of the building with ordering from counters, not waitstaff.

I get what you mean. But, Monk's has like six bars right now and is not cookie cutter crapola, it is pretty original and not at all what you imply.

So if their six locations aren't at all alike, what is the point of paying a franchise fee?
They are different but with similar feel. They look at the surrounding city environment, community, needs, trends and long-term commitment. It is the management and creativity you franchise into. Their menu is very nice and the one drawback may be that they are medium high price.

This might be a deterrent to someone who has already proven they know how to put their own restaurant together:

A Monk’s Franchise and facility can cost between $1,000,000 and $4,000,000 to open including the Franchise fee, equipment, inventories, leasehold improvements, and the first three month’s operating capital.
