Not exactly sure.
I agree on the locked hands but I thought he got that last takedown myself

Son watched the dual, I was working, and he said at minimum there should have been two defensive back points. Said he felt it was an easy four points but should have at least been some even with a slow count.

My dad and I were very confused that he didn’t get the 2 when it looked like the official clearly counted 2. Anybody know what happened there?

I thought there was a definite 2 for a danger count during the last scramble. Official was slow to start, and finish, the count.

Did the official ever start the danger count? To me, it looked like he was saying Lugo was still at 90 degrees. His hand was moving up and down.

125: Lee maj 4-0
133: DeSanto tech 9-0
141: Parker dec 9-3
149: Lugo dec 12-3
157: Carr dec 12-6
165: Marinelli maj 16-6
174: Kemerer tech 21-6
184: Colbray dec 21-9
197: Warner dec 24-9
285: Cassioppi maj 28-9

With the probables and DeSanto at 133, the toss-ups are 149,157,184 imo. The Clones have a path to a 5/5 split, but I don’t see where they match the Hawks bonus.
I also see a path where this gets VERY ugly for ISU. Small took a loss last week and could very much lose to a Glynn/Teasdale while DeSanto could wrestle 141 and give Parker fits as long as he doesn’t go underneath.
I think starting weight will play a big factor. Brands will want to roll out Lee and Dresser won’t want to have a 9-0 hole to come out of.

Nailed it.

You’re correct. After watching it again, it was definitely a count, and the officially definitely counted twice. Started a third and stopped.

@crablegs I thought the danger count should have been awarded too. Degen had the high ground, the ref counted off two, two should have been awarded.

They were very quick to award the danger counts with the Lee/Mackall scrambles.

As for the locked hands, with half of Hilton yelling out "2!!!" and Lugo getting both his arms around Jarrett, Degen thought Lugo had the reversal and threw on the chest wrap to horse him over for the pin. I may be wearing my homer goggles, but looking back at the match it looked like Lugo reversed to me also. Degen was on his butt and Lugo had his arms around him, but I could be wrong.

@Scott34 Ditto on the needing a third party for the challenge calls as they have in freestyle.

There is no such thing as “defensive back points.” There is a neutral danger zone takedown (2 points) when the back is exposed past 90 degrees for a 2 count. The ref in this case ruled there was no 2 count. He was either counting multiple 1 counts and/or he motioned Lugo went back to 90 degrees or less. The count restarts each time. There’s no scenario where 4 points are rewarded like a near fall.

Honest question, will the wrestling clubs that the top schools have like PSU, OSU, and Iowa create something of a permanent advantage for them? I mean I know ISU is working hard to improve their club, but that Mizzou kid transferred to Iowa specifically for it right? Doesn’t PSU pick up guys in their club from other places? It just seems to me that it will be very, very difficult to get the level of recruit those schools get if they can constantly tout the training partners they’ll have because of their club programs.

I’m 100% a novice but this just seems to be a huge, huge advantage for the top programs right now.

You may be a novice, but you’re 100% correct. Dresser is doing a lot to try to build the RTC at ISU. Until it’s built, it will be difficult to land the biggest recruits. They want to go places where they can make world/Olympic teams.

If he counted to 3 he would have awarded 2 points. He either had separate 1/2 counts or one of his motions was to say Lugo went back to 90 or more degrees.

Yeah he really officiated that match correctly you're right
