You are generally correct. I was mostly trying to say that Fred did not walk into a literally bare cabinet -- there were some okay pieces there, but nothing like what Prohm would walk into with Morris, Niang, and etc. that we know and love from those years.

I have seen other coaches starting with less.

Few observations...

(1.) McD, for all his failings, which were numerous, did leave Melvin Ejim behind. I do not remember Fred leaving behind a freshman of that caliber to develop.

(2.) I meant it as a shot against McD. Those guys were the bench on teams featuring guys like Brackins and Gilstrap. I still have no idea how he failed to win basketball games.

(3.) I still love that conspiracy theory where we redshirt DG for the Royce White year.

(4.) Prohm ended up with one more year than we has "promised" with Monté and Naz because of injuries (to both of them) and Monté deferring the NBA for one more year.

Still say he'll end up with the Timberwolves.....but that's just me. Guessing in a few games they will be eliminated from playoffs, so maybe they act then.

It’s not Morgan’s fault that Stinson and Blalock hated McDermott so much that they both decided to forgo their senior years in a terrible decision to try to go pro. Stinson, Blalock and Clark would have been a pretty good foundation, I think. Didn’t Carr transfer that summer as well?

Yes Carr transfered as well. We were also supposed to get Farnold Degand but he decomitted. Don’t know if he was ever decent at NC State (I think?)

McD could recruit, there is no doubt about that, he brought in great players, but he could not keep them once they got here. And his actual coaching left a lot to be desired. He tried too many plays, too many different sets, and the kids just never could catch on. Some of that might have been because many did not stay around more than a couple of season.

McD failed differently than most coaches that move up, his recruiting was fine, it was his coaching and not keeping the kids on campus that was his downfall.

I agree with you -- he was supposed to be an ace X's and O's guy at UNI, came up to ISU, and brought in lots of talent, but never seemed to know what to do with any of it.

I like Prohm a lot, but he's definitely a better recruiter than X's and O's guy coming out of the OVC and Murray State. Not what you might have initially expected with him.

Yep, forgot about Taggart. He was a Morgan guy, played on Morgans last team and left too.

I haven't found one large enough for me to retire a pair of shorts, but my wife throws them out anyway

Fred is a smart guy. Smart enough to take advantage of the timing where the transfer explosion was just starting. He's not going to get the same level of kids that route this time. He is going to have to straight up recruit talent now. I'm not convinced he can. Now if he brings with him some top rate recruiter coupled with Nebraska's bagman talents, then he might have something.

I never stated that claim. But really both aren’t good jobs. A&Ms main advantage is being closer to better hs talent. Nebraska has better fan support and facilities, which helps them some. It’s no secret Tim Miles has brought talent there, he’s just a lousy coach.

I haven't read this whole thread but Moos was openly courting Scott Frost before he fired Riley so it wouldn't surprise me if he was openly courting a new BB coach before firing Miles.

aTm is a better job, in a much better area to recruit too. The SEC is also not as good as a conference for BB than the Big 10 is, its improving, but not there yet.

I think Fred is a good recruiter, and there are more impact transfers now then when he really started going after them, but there is also a lot more schools doing it now, then when Fred was one of the few doing it.

Too me, Fred was burnt out on busting his butt to recruit a kid, and then have the kid end up at a different school because they were paying the kid under the table. Fred knew that was never going to happen at ISU, and even if he wanted too, there was not a large booster at ISU willing and able to supply the cash.

Yeah it's a real dump. It's as nice as any arena in the country. I can't believe you are this butthurt that Hoiberg may start dating someone else! Just admit it's a great arena. You could sell that to a recruit just as easy as Hilton.

You should check my other posts in this thread. I’m fine with Fred going back to college. I want him to coach my timberwolves first and for most, but he wants to be back in college I’m ok with it.

I think UNLV and UCLA are better jobs for him though. Nebraska doesn’t have any past success and is a football first school. I just think he can do better and should do better. Nebraska is a step down from Iowa State.

I loved gilstrap.

I did, too. I would have loved to see what he could have done in Fred's wide-open system and/or playing something like the Shayok role on our current squad.

I thought the Vaughn thing left a pretty bad taste in his mouth.

Such a high recruit, good fit for the system on a team ready to take a huge step the next year, and... a UNLV bagman comes along and ruins all of Fred's work and plans.

I can see Fred saying eff this and not wanting to play an unfair game anymore.

Crazy to think Vaughn is only 22 and on his third NBA franchise.
