Damn! I think Scott Drew polished his head - there were white lines through his comb-over, and I finally realized it was a reflection of the overhead lights.

Holy Crap!!!!
Just had a barred owl take a squirrel off my birdfeeder about 4 feet from my window!!!

Got a couple great horned owls I never see but hear hooting at night all of the time. Useless to me as they aren't active enough in the daytime to take any of the tree rats.

Ponds going down. The frost line is leaving. Figured it was on the outs when some people in town announced they didn’t have water yesterday. Usually happens when the frost gets driven down.

We've had anywhere from 2-5 in our woods out back ever since we've been here (2003), barred not great horned. We've seen them hunt but never this close up.

OOOOO!! First male goldfinch of the year out there right now! :D

I posted this in the photography thread. Picture I took in Mexico a couple weeks ago of a Ferruginous Pygmy-owl. :D

Oooh, now I want to bring my Nikon and stalk birds on your property!
Half-dozen different types of woodpeckers & flickers, grosbeaks, goldfinches, orioles, the owls, cardinals, junkos and miscellaneous other small birds. We've had hawks nesting by the creek several different years, and eagles & cranes have done fly-bys. Last spring a pair of Pileateds drilled a nest in a tree not far from the balcony, and I got to see little fuzzy redheaded mouths poking out of the hole several times before the @!*Y_%(!@_Y_^! starlings took over the nest. Man, I hate starlings. BTW, Lew ensured the demise of that particular pair of starlings.

Update: flight from Little Rock to Dallas was postponed once or twice. Fight from Dallas was postponed 2 or 3 times, but then the latest Little Rock postponement made it impossible to catch the Dallas flight. Decided to stay the night in Dallas and catch a 6 something flight to KC tomorrow morning. Until they cancelled that flight. Now looking at a slightly later flight into KC. I haven't been to the KC airport in years and have never driven there by myself. Dense fog advisory until mid-morning and it's already late because of that crappy DST. Can't wait. (Or words to that effect.)
Final flight update: morning flight from DFW to KC delayed twice and then they sat for 30 min waiting for the first officer to make his way thru the airport from a deadhead trip from Chicago. Arrived in KC shortly after noon, picked up the passenger and drove downtown. Scored a street 3-hr spot blocks from Sprint and got to watch the last 1:40 of our game.
Side note: roads were good, no flooding over them, but dang it was windy and cold. Plus near freezing drizzle and 38 degrees southernmost Iowa and 30 miles into Missouri along I35.
I will cheer loud in person at our next game, promise!

I hate to do it but I think I am going to have to make the interstate my route to work and home for the short term. The roads in town are like negotiating a mine field.

I'm going to be cheering from my couch, alone, and hopefully scaring the cats with my excitement. ;)

Lew is watching it on watchESPN in Lincoln. He took his two of his sisters back over to visit one of their brothers who had a triple bypass last Monday. Brother is doing well...in a lot of pain, but up & walking & may be discharged tomorrow. Dang, they run folks out of there fast now! That kind of surgery used to leave folks in the hospital for a week or two, and a rehab for another week after.
Glad to hear he’s doing well. Can’t assume anything, but still a good feeling.
Love the owl stuff! Many, many groups of birds-mostly geese- heading north today as I went south. Do they know something we should?
