I've been through that intersection! That's quite the pothole.

I texted DH to be careful this morning, we're getting rain now plus close to 50-60 next two days and the snow is melting so major flooding expected with the frozen ground. Already higher water than I've ever seen on my drive in which is nuts because it's not that it's so much water yet, it's just that the ground is frozen plus ice/snow blocking normal dispersal routes. Water starting over the road in a couple spots and if it keeps up I suspect I'll have to take a different route in or home. Oh, and the reason for this tangent, the water over the roads is hiding the new potholes.

How many weeks did you get for maternity leave? How many did your husband get for paternity leave? There's been a huge change in that benefit and curious if you felt any effects

I'm not sure I understand - your company has changed? Or are you perhaps referring to the new policy in WA? Federally, I was allowed up to 12 weeks unpaid. My company does short term disability at full pay for 6 or 8 weeks depending on the type of birth. They briefly changed it a couple years ago to be 2/3 pay for up to 8 weeks and enough of us created a fuss on that. No official paternity leave though fathers could use vacation time. DH gets 2 weeks paternity which is a newer policy, plus FMLA. He had some old sick time from their prior system that he used as well. His company does 8 weeks full pay for all women.

Need more states to get on NY, CA, NJ, and WA's path. Don't get me started on this topic, I'll never stop!

Lucky for you guys, I'm in meetings the next three days and I need to go stat because it's musical chair time and I don't want to lose.

I got one day for my oldest and a half day for my second. Nuttin' for the third. C-sections let you know when it's happening.

Here is a weird coincidence. Yesterday, I got a call during lunch but I let it go since I was at the college visit and it was on vibrate in my coat pocket. A college student sat with us and we chatted with him a bit, nice kid, a chem eng. major from Ottumwa. Look at my phone after lunch to see who called, looked to be a spam call, and it's a call from Ottumwa.

it wasn't me.

Showed husband pothole picture. We lived in Omaha for 8 1/2 years of our married life, husband was there for an additional 6 before that. (That includes his time at ISU though)

"I'm trying to picture 72nd & Dodge. I can see Saddlecreek, I can see 50th..."
"Crossroads Mall...well, USED to be Crossroads Mall."

Husband getting old. ;)

Pothole at 72nd & Dodge in Omaha. One of the busiest intersections in town

We found a few of those in Lincoln the past couple of days. And DANG...they really don't do ANY snow removal in residential areas. Narrow streets, cars parked on both sides, deep ruts down the middle...yikes!

That's one of the worse parts when we see water we have no idea if it is just a puddle or if it is a water filled canyon. The roads in Omaha were so neglected for so many years it is going to take a another decade or so to get caught up. They say in order to fix all the roads up to code it would be about $800 million.

It's still Crossroads Mall in name only. I haven't been in there in a while but last time it was a ghost town. The Sears is half empty. They need to tear the whole thing down and start over with some sort of multi use area. The bad part is they tore down Younkers and built a Target so there is one new part and the rest is old. The adjacent lot that was Best Buy and Fareway? has been sitting empty for a few years. Lots of prime location land that needs to be redeveloped.

Lived in Lincoln for 3 years. Their snow removal is ATROCIOUS! The chop you have to go through in every intersection after a storm sucks.

Well you can always slip over to the Joni Ernst thread and rant a bit, should you feel the need.

Weather/news reports from DSM this morning are warning of the eventual closing of George Flagg Parkway and Fleur, among others. Of course this is happening now - I need to pick up DH at the airport after a flight due in just before 11 tonight. Crossing fingers that the flooding on Fleur holds off until after the airport trip at least.
After that I don't care. We're headed to KC early tomorrow and not traveling in the city proper.
So much fog here in town in Ames today. And yet, I had to flash lights at a couple of vehicles with NO LIGHTS ON! Good lord people, visibility is less than three blocks and you don't think about having your lights on???

Yea that was me thinking more in my head than writing down. The tech industry has gone under a massive change in that benefit and was curious if spread to other areas of the country.

Not sure what the laws are but my company offers 12 weeks of paid paternity leave and an extra 8 weeks paid if you're a birth mother. That includes adoptions. You also get "unlimited" days or half days off for appointments leading up to the birth. They pretty much force us to take 6 weeks off. The manager is told to stop the person from coming back until at least 6 weeks has passed.

We also require any partner we work with to offer 12 weeks minimum paid or we won't sign a contract with them. (Important to note that this doesn't include customers. Partners are generally folks that work under our contracts and to the customer they are us but in reality they work for another company)

I know Netflix offers 12 MONTHS, Google is 7 weeks for fathers and 20 weeks for mothers, Facebook gives 16 weeks, Amazon is 20 weeks.

It's slowly changing for the better. I know there was some grumblings early on about "what if I don't want kids, can I just take 10 weeks off?" and things like that. I guess I kinda get that because it's a choice to have a child but there's no way to make it "fair" unless you have an unlimited policy for all PTO. My manager was more succinct about it when this one guy brought that up, "Alright, when I make a time machine, I'll go back in time and make sure your parents choose not to have you"

That's awesome. And to be clear, I think we need better leave for people to care for other family, their own illness, and pto in general. But anyone who thinks it's 10 weeks of vacation is welcome to try out postpartum life for themselves.

A friend of mine had to take quite a bit of leave when she was caring for her terminally ill wife (cancer). She maxed out her leave at ISU (sick leave can be used to care for immediate family), and some of us tried to donate leave to her account but were not able to as the leave had to be for the individual's illness, not for emergency family care. I didn't understand that, because her wife could not drive herself to Rochester, or to IC, or even to her own chemo & radiation treatments just a few blocks away. She was as helpless as any child in that regard. A number of us wrote to HR regarding that ruling.

I'm not sure of the details because I retired soon afterward, but I believe that sick leave donation rule has now been changed. I think that's a good thing.

Apparently Argent is fairly gung ho on this whole 737 MAX thing.

Cave thread? Thought we had some talk on this but maybe it got moved.

If the 737 MAX was made by Airbus or Bombardier the FAA would have already grounded it. This is starting to reek of conflicts of interest and influence peddling, not surprising considering the industry background in the DoD and FAA. Not American airlines so no biggie. It's a also an American airplane company and few Americans were killed (also mostly not white people!) so no biggie. Still possible they might be feeling some heat with most countries grounding but I am not holding my breath.

In practice, my company is "unlimited" when it comes to our own illness or bereavement and honestly even vacation. They don't care about policy until you abuse it. When I had my blood clot thing I was in the hospital for a week and then took another week off. I was gonna work that third week until my manager was like "Screw PTO, HR doesn't even check it unless I say there is abuse. Take another week off". So I did.
