Big 12 Wrestling Touney Thread

Can you (or anyone) explain what “wrestle for true 7th” means? Does it mean the loser of the fifth place match wrestles the guy who lost to the 5th place wrestler in the previous round?

"True" placing matches are only for even-numbered places (2, 4, 6).

For true 6th, the loser of the 5th-place match faces the winner of the 7th-place match. The exception is if they've already faced each other earlier in the tournament. In that case, the winner of that previous match is declared true 6th.

Team solid in second place and everyone still wrestling. A really good day so far for the good guys. Would appreciate any analysis on the positions of Schumacher and Straw, and what needs to happen for them to qualify.

Schumacher is kind of screwed. With only 5 spots available and Smith getting shoehorned in to the #7 seed the only way he gets in is if somebody injury defaults. He'd have to beat a to 12 guy to get in short of that. If Oklahoma State hadn't done their shift, or if they'd done a better job seeding Smith, he would be going to Pittsburgh but they did so he isn't in a good spot.

Straw is win or go home but he's only a small underdog in the finals against Thomas.

Must be slow, but how does that work if there's 6 guys left? Theres a potential 3 loss wrestler ?

Proved I was slow on the reply, thanks for the explanation

At the weights where there are 6 spots they added a 7th place match. The guys who lost in the 2nd round consolations tonight will wrestle each other in that one. As long as whoever wins that match hasn't already lost to the guy who loses the 6th place match those two win wrestle a true 6th match. The logic behind it is that the person who beat the guy who wins the 7th place match could have placed as high as 3rd and definitely placed in the top 5 (since they don't hold the match if he takes 6th). So to be fair to that guy they add a match to make sure that he's really in or out of the top six.

It's a thing that's tough to explain, but makes perfect sense once you get the reasoning behind it.

Probably a better way to explain it...

For Iowa high school districts the top 2 guys advance. If the guy who wins the 3rd place match is the guy who lost to the wrestler that took 1st then he gets a shot against the guy who lost in the finals. The idea being that both of those guys only lost to #1 so it is only fair to see which one of the two wins head to head. So they add a true 2nd place match to see which of the two guys that only lost to the champion is better. A true 6th match is just taking that same thought process further down the podium.

I gotta believe that second at Big 12s will make him more likely than not to ultimately make the 33, no?

If there were no upsets at 157 elsewhere he would have had a shot. But there's been a bunch of upsets at 157 at conference tournaments today so the competition for an at large at 157 is looking to be pretty fierce. He's got a chance if he loses tomorrow. Just not a very good one.

Grapplecy would be the best to answer this, but assume he's at the tourney. Seems to me we have 3 guys kind of on the bubble. Mackell just won in the wrestlebacks and needs to win one of his next 2 to be assured a ticket as there are 5 allocations at 125. He did earn one of those 5, so would probably have a decent shot at an at large should he finish 6th or 7th.

Straw has been wrestling really well, but unfortantely only one auto-qualifier at 157. Win and he's in. I don't know as much about the rest of the field, but I'd think he'd have a decent shot at an at large finishing 2nd.

Logan needs 1 more win tonight to feel comfortable. There are 6 qualifiers at 165 and he would have to lose and have help to finish 7th. His matchup with Ward from AF is very winnable, so like his chances.

We may qualify all 10!
I thought allocations at 165 dropped to 5 with Joe Smith wrestling . Chandler Rogers has earned the allocation .

Sorry I see that was already addressed my bad .
The guys I work with who are big OSU wrestling fans were livid when they heard what was up. Rogers is a great team guy and would go out and get bonus points. Instead he gets to spend his last year at home while JoJo gets to try and hold weight on a multi day weigh in and fail miserably . I was laughing hard when Romero beat him top side. One OSU fan even talked with me about it. After telling him what happened even he wonders who would want to wrestle for Smith. For reference Rogers stuck Romero when they faced off.

As we look forward to tomorrow, I wanted to put where we are tonight in some kind of perspective.

1. It has been a very long time since we qualified ten for nationals. We still have a chance to do this. Last year we had one qualifier. Before that.... well you remember.

2. We had a consistent lineup this year of guys who showed up for the vast majority of duals and tournaments with very few injuries and no-shows. This has got to be a byproduct of our new leadership and culture. This is one of the areas where we are definitely outperforming our competition. There is something about the way our guys train and compete that makes a difference.

3. We will finish second at Big 12’s. Last year we finished seventh.

4. Guys are at the top of their game as we finish the year. I still think we will see is an even higher ceiling in two weeks.

5. We continue to win the great majority of matches we should, and always seem to have the chance to upset higher seeded wrestlers. We are aggressive and we are scoring. No excuses because none are needed.

6. The performances of Straw and Schumacher today are great examples of where the program is going. You never know when someone is going to make a surge like they each did today.

7. We have a dynamic staff that knows how to communicate. Positive. Recruiting is strong. The future is bright. Those on rival boards ( or better said board) who used to take shots at us are nowhere to be found— and a couple of the more cowardly ones who have been hiding for weeks seem to have disappeared altogether.

As I look forward to tomorrow, I have great confidence that our coaches are preparing these young men to be at their absolute best, and are in the best possible place exceed expectations.

It’s a great time to be a Cyclone wrestling fan.

May not work out for them, but Smith won 2 straight matches against Rogers to win the spot. Has nothing to do with his dad being the coach. 1-on-1 and Smith won the spot. Rogers being with the team at the tournament shows how much he enjoys the team. Why wouldn't someone want to wrestle for Smith?

ISU performance so far = awesome. Tough losses in the semis for Gomez, Parker and Gremmel, but coming back for 3rd is huge at this point. 133 seeding is going to be crazy, especially with Micic MFF out of Big Tens. Need to bring the fire today.

I know people around the room. JoJo wasn’t cutting for his matches with Rogers. He was a 74 wrestling a 65. And he was then going to cut and have to make weight multiple days at Big12s. A good coach willl think of these things as well.

Regardless having 4 guys going for titles is massive progress. ISU is way ahead of schedule on the rebuild.

I've been very impressed with the improvement of the program.Love it. Reminds me of the good old days.
Really impressed with the kid Chase Straw. Rooting especially hard for him today.Good luck to all the Cyclones wrestling today.

Here's what the 7 guys that haven't punched their tickets yet need to do today.

125: There are 5 allocations so he just needs to win one match. It doesn't matter if it is against Schwarm in the consolation semis or against the loser of Montoya/Moody (probably Moody) in the 5th place match.
133: Same as 125, just needs one win and it doesn't matter which match
141: Also just needs one win, but he'll get three tries since there will be a true 6th match
149: Already punched
157: Straw needs a win tonight in the finals
165: Same as 125, needs one win (but the odds are not good)
174: Same as 125, needs one win
184: Already punched
197: Already punched
HWT: Same as 141, needs one win but he'll get 3 shots at it.

I've been off at the number of allocations at 174 all weekend, The conference actually lost a spot at 165 due to the OSU shift but 174 and 184 didn't actually lose a spot because OSU had changed their guys before the Feb 28th deadline for rankings. I'd been counting the conference down a spot at 174 and 184 as well as 165. Woops. That really helps Coleman's chances.
